styles of North Shore
housing designs.

Shore Health Unit Cardiac
Rehabilitation team to help
combat this killer.

Basically aimed at lifestyle
change, the program offers
the client the opportunity to
improve the quality of life
and prevent the progression
of heart disease. Home visits
are made by Community
Health Nurses who work
upon referral from the
family physician to carry on
with the rehabilitation only

Cardio vascular disease is
associated with obesity,
hypertension, smoking, and
high stress levels. There is a
higher incidence in those
having a family history of
heart disease and diabetes,
and those who are male and
over 50.

However, women are
catching up statistically and
age levels are lowering in
men. Although these perma-
nent risk factors cannot be
eliminated it is possibie to
lessen the likelihood of heart

attack by eating a nutritious
diet, by practising a regular
routine of exercise, by not
smoking and by controlling
stress.

Continued assessment,
support, and education for
the client and family after
hospital discharge are pro-
vided by Community Health
Nurses. Results can be seen
in the minimizing of risk
factors and early resumption
of normal lifestyle, helping
patients achieve optimal
physical and psychological
potentials.
