A8 - Wednesday, March 31, 1982 - North Shore News BE mailbox ee Trustees meeting reminiscent of Bond movie Dear Editor: The letter of March 15 dealing with “W.V. pay kes justified” by C.Dawn Sikula needs some clanfica- tion. Are the salanes quoted by the trustee those paid before or after the increase, or have the hefty increases been added on to the figures quoted? If this is so, where is it all going to end! The continual need for “catch-up” as explained in her letter has nothing to do with productivity or “main- taining the quality of educa- tion” but simply a means of ensuring a bigger portion of the public pie each year. In her concluding paragraph she states the “Board’s action in this mat- ter should be considered beyond reproach”. If correct in this assumption why was the meeting called so hur- nedly before the Premier spoke, and why was it held in a hotel room with an open telephone line to the one dissident member? This scenario gave the impression it was more in keeping with a James Bond movie than a dignified and = articulate meeting of the W.V. School Board! D.M. Burbidge, who, it seems, is a former school trustee, who is a teacher himself, whose wife is also a teacher, in this school distmct,. and who is also the president of NOVVA, a teacher-oriented volers group, on the subject of the Hamilton School closure. As one who read the North Shore News, attended the meeting, discussed the mat- ler with a parent and student of the school, I found that all were in favor of closing the school. Mr. Burbidge missed the point. Very few were against the closure. The issue is the program. That is. keeping the program intact when the consolidatron takes place. It was understandably confusing, when, al the meeting, the school board officials were not able to submit proper figures as to cost. Replying to one ques- tioner, an official answered Sunshine Girls are no ‘sex objects’ Dear Editor: I refer specifically to a let- ter recently published (March 3) and without pre- judice, 1 am offended by its implications. He implied “soheitous” “Sunshine Girl” parucipants are far from being “sex ob- jects”. From personal knowledge of some of the Sunshine girls, they are far from being “taken advantage of” they are in fact, very in- telligent, self-supporting in- dividuals with very specific goals contnbuting to grow- ing communities in their chosen profession. I] believe the author of the referred letter is away off base and would be very em- barrassed if (he or she) knew some of these girls and the contnbutions they made to tt Weyt ARS, our society. | personally en- yoy this particular feature of Your paper — — your photography is very tasteful 2nd adds a= refreshing feature Aurla B McGarvey North Vancouver that the answer would offend a confidence.
