The main reason - is that when you go. with . friends; you aren't ‘as apt to “meet “new people, which for us is” half the fun of travelling. ae Lately, Tve been getting a lot of questions about choosing -travel companions _ for both singles and couples | ‘as well as a lot of remarks from both on some of their experiences. Another couple ‘we ‘met found themselves in similar circumstances. They. never did straighten out the hotel problem to their satisfaction and to make matters worse, one of the men snoréd so ferociously that the other, - three didn’t sleep much. - His wife -had a delightful habit of placing her false teeth in a glass of water on the bathroom sink. She spent one full. hour in the bathroom three times a day. And, she left her underwear ‘soaking in the KITCHEN SINK! The other problem they discovered was the reason - his.cabin mates turned out to the: other girl sat in the lobby - of the hotel until she got | the “all clear” . One young man I met shared a cabin on a ship with three strangers. He couldn’t -believe his eyes when one of be “female”. Well, atmost! He was beautiful, with long blond. hair and exquisite - ‘makeup. He’ shaved his whiskers with “Neet!” & . Actually, he turned out to be quite a pleasant cabin companion—his belongings were néatly stored and he smelled a lot better than the ' other two! Besides, he was rarely around, Rumor had it trayel- by Barbara McCreadie One couple told me that they planned a vacation with another couple whom they had known for years. They rented what they thought “was a two-bedroom con- dominium in Hawaii. Because both men are ex- tremely tall, they specified queen-sized beds. From the “beginning of their holiday EVERYTHING went wrong! Their flight was delayed six hours and then, after two hours in the air they had to return to Vancouver for repairs to the plane. By the time they arrived in Honolulu, it was the middle of the night. Something got gibbied-up with their hotel reservations and instead of two bedrooms, ctc., they found themselves flipping a coin for who got the one bedroom with the ordinary double bed while the losers got the hide-a-beds in the living room. They managed to sort that out the next day but not without a lot of phone-calls to their Canadian agent and running around on their own. With two days of their vacation already shot, they decided to head for the beach on the third day. Carefully locking all their belongings in the trunk of the car they raced for the surf. It didn't take long for a thief to jimmy open the trunk and steal the whole ° works. Luckily, their wallets and purses only contained a small amount of cash but even their underwear was taken. After a week of variable cloudiness in Honolulu, they headed for Maui. And were fit to be tied when their reservations were again mixed-up, but this time they didn't have beds at all. Another day went by while they scarched for some place to stay. It was fortunate that their friendship survived the strain! _ husband, the guy snored. He had quite a drinking problem. In fact, by noon each day he was fairly well corked. His wife did her share in that department, too, but instead of just going rigid, like her she went by regular progression, from the giggles to the weeps and ended up feeling ‘romantic’. Since her husband was zonked by this time, any available male would do. She picked up strays in bars, often disappearing for a while. appeared later at the hotel, banging loudly on the door to be let in. Luckily, husband was well into the snoring by this time or they would have gotten to know the homicide department. ; After the first week, the couples went their separate ways and haven’t seen each other since! . ° Singles, too, have their share of bad experiences in the world of travel. Money can be a real problem. One gal told me that she had done a European junket with a woman she thought she knew fairly well. Her companion was a compulsive shopper and bought everything she could lay her hands on. But, when it came time to split the meal check or the liquor bill, she was always acouple of dollars short. Cabs got the same treatment, as did tips. The woman was good company and they had a lot of fun but they never travelled together again. One girl, in her early 20's, told me that she travelled for a month with a girlfriend. This turned into a disaster when she learned that the friend had very liberated ideas about sex. In fact, she liberated ai different guy every night—using their hotel room. This meant that WAIKIKI $369 8 Nays. 7 Mighta. Av 4 Note! WAIKIKI $469 18 Oays. 14 Mignts. Air & Hote!
