February 13, 1991 - North Shore News - 45 oe a hI ae Ng aN Troops receive valentines A CLASS of North Vancouver elementary school students has sent St. Valentine’s Day cards to Canadian troops serv- ing in the war against Iraq. Twenty-seven Larson Elemen- tary School Grade 5 and 6 French immersion students put the cards together last week. Parent Anne Saltiel heard News columnist Joy Metcalfe suggest the idea on the radio. Saltiel then wrote a note to Andy Hone, her daughter Frida’s teacher, sug- gesting the idea for the class. Frida pitched the plan to fellow students and they agreed that it was a good one. According to Hone some of the students had participated in a peace march at the school last month, while many other Lower Mainland students voiced their feelings about the war at city hall in Vancouver. But he said, ‘‘They're concern- ed about support. A number of them want the troops to know they have support at home.”’ Saltiel sent half of the cards to the army and half of them to the navy. Said Hone, “I think the fact that it’s tied in with Valentine's Day makes it a littl more palatable for people with mixed feelings about it.’” ~ Meanwhile, a card from Ashley, 10, to the troops read: ‘‘To our By Michael! Happy Valentine's Day.’’ Said Ashley as she worked out the design of her card, ‘1 wish they wouldn't have a war, but you can’t stop it.”” A few seats away Jesse, 11, put the finishing touches to his Valen- tine’s Day card: ‘‘To our ser- vicemen and servicewomen in the gulf. I hope you come home soon. Keep up the good work.”’ Said 10-year-old Nina of the war, “I think it should stop. Maybe if they just talk it over.’’ Her card read: ‘‘To our ser- vicemen and service women in the gulf. My name is Nina. I am 10 years old. I go to school at Larson Elementary School. | hope the wars ends soon.”’ Added Hone, when asked for his thoughts on the war, ‘I think the whole thing is a sad situation really.
