Hosted by author Pierre Berton
and featuring speakers such as
Peter C, Newman, William
Deverell, William Gibson, Audrey
Thomas and Lillian Allen, the
event attracted several hundred g
supporters of both Clayoquot and
Cantit.

Of the items auctioned off, Ber-
ton’s bow tie fetched $155 and the
garter that B.C. poet Susan
Musgrave wore to her prison wed-
ding with bankrobber Stephen
Reid garnered $60.

Also available in the cache were
the signecl, original lyric sheets for
the U2 song Numb, a limited first
edition of DH. Lawrence's Love
Among the Haystacks, a hand-
written poem hy Margaret Atwood
and a 20-year-old briar pipe do-
nated by Farley Mowat,

tn other action, the Seventh
Doorman’s Annual at Stanley
Park’s Fish House restaurant at-
tracted the high and mighty ina
tribute to, well, doormen,

That's right, those dapper lads
and gents who serve and protect
the entrances to the town’s finer
hotels and establishments had
somebody else working the gate
for a change.
