FIOCKEY SEASON OPENS

The Flames
skate to four
straight wins

THE NORTE Shore Winter Club Flames opened regular
season play of the 1989-90 West Coast ‘Junior Hockey
League schedule, skating to a hard-fought 5-3 win over the
Seattle Northwest Americans, Saturday night at the winter

club.

And for the Flames, who went
undefeated in their three exhibition
games, any doubts about the value
of coach Fred DesRochers’ tough
pre-season conditioning regimen
should now be dispelled, especially
after Saturday’s encounter with the
speedy, rough and tumble Seattle
team.

Seattle opened the scoring with a
short-handed goal just three and a
half minutes into the game for a
1-0 lead, which they held until the
period's dying seconds.

But with only six seconds re-
maining, Scott Gordon convei ted
some hard work along the boards
by Brad Costa and Wade Bartok
to net the equalizer with a blister-
ing shot from thirty feet out.

Ajthough the Flames dominated
play throughout the period, out-
shooting the Americans 19-10, it
was the stellar play of goaltender
Gary <XKnight that allowed the
Flares time to get untracked as he
stonewalled Seattle shooters with
sparkling stops on two breakaway
chances late in the period.

The Flames took a 2-1] lead at

the 2:56 mark of the second period
as rookies Dave Shepard and Rob
Tournier combined for a power
play goal.

Seattle drew even again midway
through the period but Costa,
assisted by Kevin Buhr retaliated
with a power-play goal at 16:41 to
close out the scoring and a 3-2 lead
after two periods. :

Just over a minute into the third
period, Seattle tied the score at
three but the Flames regained the
lead again as Gordon notched his
second goal of the night scoring on
the power play from Costa and
Buhr,

Costa picked up his second goal
of the game, and four points on
the night, scoring an empty net
market with 48 seconds remaining
and Seattle pressing for the
equalizer.

Over the three periods the
Fiames outshot Seattie 50-33.

The Flames’ next game is Satur-
day, September 30 when they host
last year’s feague champions, the
Abbotsford Pilots, at the North
Shore Winter Club at 8:45 p.m.
