: Cancer Society : (CCS), B.C. Municipal money grubbers be gone Dear Editor: Your July 7 cover story “District manager muddle revealed” really dragged what little is left of my social con- science out into the open. ‘Not that I am angry about the fact that the district is pay- ing two salaries concurrently. I think that is only fair. After all, I would expect some form of severance pay, preferably generous. What does upset me. though is the ridiculous wages these people get. And if media sources are correct, this happens in al} levels and facets of municipal organization, mostly in administration, last year’s schoo! board fiasco being a perfect example. ICBC also comes to mind. These are service positions and should attract individu- als who want to perform a — you guessed it — service to their community. . With the substantial earnings these jobs offer, people motivated principal’y by money are more likely to be hired, “because: they will work harder to market themselves for “these, roles..: “Tf relatively meager éarnings (read $50,000 to $60,000 per annum) were offered, more virtuous and effective appli- cants would receive these key positions for. the good of our community. ; On that note,’ and with this letter, I call for the immedi- ‘ate closing’ of our municipal coffers to these money-grub- rs. District staff and interested members from many groups are spending many hours on this new plan which will guide our district's development. Housing, trans- portation routes, commercial growth and many basic guidelines are affected by the district OCP. Two unsolved issues must be decided before the OCP can be accurately planned. What is going to happen to Cove and Mountain Forest? Where and, how do we control the increasing number of sec- ondary suites? When you cxamine the: Cove and Mountain Forest issue with logic, you will See that Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) will have to either build or take the district to couit. A responsible agency that represents all Canadians cannot give up $150 million of land to please the people of one small por- tion of an area. The district cannot plan Seymour hous- ing, transportation, need for community centres and other services until the fate of the rest of Cove and Mountain Forest is decided by the required referendum. Neither council, GUARD ner district staff have told the people of the district how we would be able to forfeit $150 mil- lion of sales over the next 20 years and pay CMHC its millions that will be lost. Sixty per cent of the area was the max- imum area to be covered with housing. This leaves more area as green space than anywhere else in the district. This still represented a large portion of future housing for the district. All services, roads; schools, etc. were planned with this area as housing, as designated in the exist- ing OCP.
