Drug seller fined for tax evasion A 36-YEAR-OLD West Vancouver man was fined $27,469 Tuesday ‘in North Vancouver provincial court after he pleaded guilty to evading laxes on money earned from the sale of narcotics. ‘Gary LeClare was originally charged with one count of tax eva- sion in connection with $104,915 earned during 1980 and 1981, Revenue Canada investigators calculated LeClare’s income through a net-worth assessment. which uses the difference between a person’s accumulated assets and his liabilities as his earnings over a set period. LeClare was also charged with making a false statement on his income (ax return in connection with a stetement made March 22, 1982,in which he is alleged to have claimed his total income for the 1980 tax year was $20,595.27. Revenue Canada alleges he failed to declare an additional $42,852 in income. During the course of Revenue Canada investigations, LeClare admitted that much of the money he earned during 1980 and 1981 was through the sale of narcotics. In all, LeClare owes Revenue Canada $175,000 in back taxes, _ interest, fines and penalties. The $27,469 fine was the amount of tax owed by LeClare on the money earned in 1980 and 1981. Following LeClare’s guilty plea on the first charge, a stay of proceedings was entered in the second charge against LeClare. He has until December 1988 to pay the court fine. Federal prosecutors have not yet decided whether LeClare willbe prosecuted on drug charges.
