THIS summer the heat
has become unbearable
for many people.

That means more casey of the
cramps, heat exhaustion, heat-
stroke (sunstroke) and sun-
burns. Here’s how to tell
them apart and how to help
somcone suffering from heat
exposure:

@ Heat Cramps — nor seri-
ous.

Symptoms: Painful muscle
cramps on legs and stomach
caused by too much water and
salt loss through sweating.

First Aid: Place the casual-
ty at rest in a cool place and
give water to drink.

@ Hear Exhaustion — serious
to life-threatening.

Symptoms: excessive
sweating, dizziness, blurred
vision, headache or cramps;
also cold, clammy and pale
skin; weak, rapid pulse, rapid
shallow. breat ing, vomiting
and unconsciousness. All

mptoms caused by too
much fluid loss.

First Aid: If a person is
conscious, place him or her at
rest in 2 cool place with e
elevated about 30 cm (1 ft
and offer water to drink.

Remove heavy clothing
and loosen clothes. If the per-
son is unconscious, send for
medical help, then turn the
Person onto one side with the
upper leg bent at the hip and
knee to serve as a brace.

Symptoms: Body tempera-
ture rises rapidly to 40°C or
higher and the person is hot
to the touch; noisy breathing,
restlessness, ‘headache, dizzi-
hess, nausea, vomiting, con-
vulsions caused by overexpo-

sure to heat and humidity.

First Aid: without iminedi-
ate aid, heatstroake can result
in permanent brain damage to
death. Saving the life of some-
one with heatstroke depends
on lowering bady temperature
fast. Get the person to a cool,
shady place.

Remove outer clothing
and then sponge with cool

water, especially ander the
arms and at the groin. Better
still, cover the person with wet
sheets or put him or her in a
cool bath. Keep this up until
medical help arrives, or until
the person feels cool to the
touch.

@ Burns — For minor sun-
burn, place casualty in) the
shade and apply cool water or
