Ray Kalia’s coolness under pressure helped diffuse a potentially seri- ous incident into little more than a routine arrest. The officer was on traffic patrol in “Lynn Valley when he observed a speeding vehicle, said North Van RCMP. Kalia pursued the speeding motorist and caught up with him in a dead-end cul-de-sac. When he approached the vehicle, Kalia noticed some MOWATT suspicious circumstances that led him to believe it had been stolen. Meanwhile the driver, who could not produce the vehicle’s — docu- ments, was clench- ing a knife. However, — Kalia was able to arrest the man, identified as John Kenneth Mowatt of North Vancouver, with- out incident. Mowatt, 21, is charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000. Police are also requesting that a charge of being in possession of'a weapon be ]a4. — Robert Galster Family bonds require effort NATIONAL Family Week runs Oct. 6 to 12. It’s hard to ignore what’s right in front of your face, says Family Service America. The sight of a young mother telling her crying toddler to shut up in the grocery check- out line; a newspaper article about a neighbor arrested for domestic abuse; a teenager living on the streets instead of at home; the staggering num- ber of divorces amid seeming- ly few success stories. This list, which to some symbolizes the decline of the Canadian family, could go on and on. For those who choose to focus on the negative, it does. There is, however, another list that is just as pow- erful: a young child pausing on the sidewalk to take a younger sibling’s hand before crossing the street; a father hugging his daughter as she walks down the aisle with her high school diploma; grand- parents looking into the eyes of their newborn grandchild; a 90 year-old gentleman hold- ing the hand of his wife of 65 years. Both of these lists exist in our society. It is up to us to make certain the positive overcomes the negative. It is up to us as a community to believe in the institution that has survived as the backbone of society, to believe in the incredible power of compas- sion, to believe in the resilience of tradition. Believe in family. Celebrate National Family Week. Pur aside some time to spend with a child, parent, sibling or a special friend who is one of ‘wae family. Take a moment to reflect on how you can make your life more family-friendly — at the workplace, at home, and in your community. Think about how you can ~~ Focus on the positive when sometimes the negative seems to surround you. Choose to focus on your family's strengths rather than) the weaknesses.
