lenged me in a letter to
the editor to say what
kind of immigration I
would like to sec.
British only? European
only?

The short answer is no.
With qualifications. Which
are:

No nation can survive as a
nation unless it wants tu be a
nation. But beginning in 1967
Ottawa decided to abandon
traditional Canada by means
of large-scale, “universal”
immigration.

Canadians were never con-
sulted. And no party has even
opposed it. Call it a conspira-

will be sullen resentment. At
worst, violence. Just take a
look at the rest of the world.

Mr. Yau asked whether
Serbs and Bosnians would be
OK. Perhaps. But Serbia and
Bosnia are perfect examples of
what I am talking about.

Our immigration “system”
is not a system. It is a open-
door farce — a plan to destroy
traditiona! Canada that was
embraced by “intellecruals”
like Pierre Trudeau.

It has been as complete a
revolution as any brought
about by force of arms. But as
I told German national televi-
sion recently, and BBC-TV
only last Friday, few Canadians
want to wake up one day to
find themselves living in a
suburb of New Delhi, Hong
Kong, Beijing, or Jamestown.

Consider the latest B.C.
Statistics report:

“About half of the immi-
grants who came to B.C.
between 1991 and and 1995
did not speak English.”

“During that period, seven
of the 10 top source countries
for B.C. immigrants were
Asian. These countries

accounted for 87% of immi-
grant landings in B.C.”

To repeat. 1 do not think
that “only thase who are cul-
turally Brt.sh” should be
admitted. And T do not think
that Europeans are necessanily
supenor to others.

But a sense of identity
counts. So does culture. And a
substantial proportion of
British and ether European
immigration is preferable to
an 80% intake from different
cultures.

How much non-white
immigration should there be?
Demographers tell us that
10% toa 15% permits “absorp-
tive Capacity,” meaning that
such proportions will become
one with the whole. But now
we are likely to be absorbed.

The anti-British Liberals
and the copycat Tories virtual-
ly excluded immigration from
Britain.

Post-war, it was once 38%.
It is now 2.5%, while immi-
gration from Europe exclusive
of the UK is down to 15%. In
1968 it was 45%.

heard of Asian gangs or any
other immigrant gangs, drive-
by shootings, Sikh riots,
bombs in aircraft, English as
Second Language in the
schools, anti-white discrimina-
tion, and many other delights.
And there was no loss of tden-
tity. Canadians knew who they
were.

Something else: the
English gave Canada Magna
Carta, habeas corpus, tial by
jury, the common law, and
parliamentary democracy.

Those things didn’t come
from Africa, India or China.

An article in the American
magazine Chronicles has put a
finger on the future.

“Given the likelihood of
increasing alienation and polit-
ical radicalizatior. under the
impact of uncontrolled immi-
gration, the economic erosion
of the middle class, and rising
ethnic and racial conflict, the
managerial regime may find
that a police state is the only
means of control it has left.”

The writer had the U.S. in
mind. It is no different here.
