Often, their contribution has been recognized with that most mobile of art —- stamps. Lions Gate Hospital nurse Maureen McKernan wants to gather as much of that artwork as possible. “Y'm quite honored that there are so many stamps with nurses on them from so many countries.” she said “while lingering over large colorful stamps from poverty-stricken African nations such as Burundi and Mali. Nurses provide a lifeline there. McKernan's ‘stamp collecting started three years ago with a Japanese stamp depicting a hip replacement. That one stamp got the 19-year nurse to thinking — are there stamps © with nurses on them? There are — at least 1,200 of them as of 1992, according to her check-list. “I had no idea there was going to be such a collection of nurse Stamps,” said McKernan. Now she’s hooked. In the collecting process, McKernan has also gath- ered information on the his- tory of nursing. Often. the stamps relate to the two world wars. In addition to the often intricate, colorful artwork, McKernan says she enjoys the hunt for the stamps. When she’s at: stamp shows, dealers have their stamps in order in boxes. While thumbing through the dealer’s stamps, McKernan’s pulse races as she gets closer to where the quarry is supposed to be. “Tm told it’s a good investment, but I do it strictly for the fun.” she said. Fortunately, her boyfriend has also been caught by the stamp-col- lecting bug. Acknowled- ging her hobby is expen- sive, McKernan said she has paid $45 for one Japanese stamp. Many stamps depict - | Florence Nightingale, who introduced formalized nursing training, ~ said McKeman. Nightingale’s birthday is May 12. To celebrate. nurses have dubbed this week Nurses’ Week.
