I could not possibly have. been _ more mistaken, * .. ~"_..My daughter. told, me after’ her first year that the “bad mums” at the - preschool hadn*t. liked ‘her, had “thought her paintings were ugly and had said it was disgusting that she was still toilet training. ... Apparently one had told my “daughter that she didn’t want any- ee win, Caras thing to do with her,’ and, another had responded to the child's remark, “My mother. thinks.[m_ beautiful”, with the reply, “Well, you're not.” My daughter claimed that all the derogatory’ comments had been made during class time while the mothers were on duty, assisting the teacher,: who was out of earshot. An adult friend who knew noth- “ing of these matters visited the preschool and shocked me by “seporting that the little girl. was being ostracized by (he ‘mothers on duty. : It must have been a hostile place for a child not yet three years old, away from her mother for the First time. a NIE a Involvement in this sort. of school entails a great deal of inter- action between parents.
