I have heard many parents in my
area expressing interest in the idea.
of assisting at their young children’s‘

» preschools, 1 was one such parent,
- choosing . to become - involved
because I thought this:.would ease:

... Apparently one had told my
“daughter that she didn’t want any-

had responded to the child's remark,
“My mother. thinks.[m_ beautiful”,
with the reply, “Well, you're not.”

My daughter claimed that all the
derogatory’ comments had been
made during class time while the
mothers were on duty, assisting the
teacher,: who was out of earshot.

It must have been a hostile place
for a child not yet three years old,

Involvement in this sort. of
school entails a great deal of inter-
action between parents. The, child
was totally unaware that the “bad

‘miums” whose names she gave me
“just happened to be exactly those

members with whom [ had dis-
agreed regarding preschool policy.

I find myself wondering how
many other children. have found
themselves — in
predicament over the years, and |
urge any parents enrolling their chil-
dren in these organizations to con-
sider the risk they are taking. My
daughter is still living with what
was done to her that year.

Examples of this are the transit and’ recreational
facilities, not to. mention thé schools that have been built
and are overcrowded as soon as construction is finished.
Serious planning for all these needs should be addressed
before development is to proceed.

~The kind of backlash to development that we now
‘see, I believe, is due to the inadequate planning in this
. area for the last 15 years. |
