Ald. denies patronage accusation A NORTH Vancouver City alderman with ties to the New Democratic Party shot back Friday over charges that the provincial govern- ment is practising patronage by giving a company he works for a $25,000 gov- ernment contract. By Surj Rattan News Reporter Liberal leader Gordon Wilson accused the provincial government of doing Ald. Bill Bell a favor by awarding the B.C. branch of the advertising firm Pradinuk Adver- tising Ltd. a contract to do mar- keting research work for the tourism ministry. Bell, a former NDP candidate who worked for the party during last fall's provincial election cam- paign, is a director of the adver- tising company. But Bell said Wilson was issuing false statements. He added that Wilson was wrong when he said lawyer Paul Sabatino, a former NDP can- didate, was a principal in the ad company and that the firm was operating out of a Vancouver law office owned jointly by Sabatino and NDP party president Ian Aikenhead. Bell said that he should not be excluded from bidding on gov- ernment contracts simply because he is a card-carrying member of the NDP. “Pve been in the public rela- tions field for a few years, and |} used to be in newspapers before that,’’ said Bell, who is on a leave of absence from his public ;ela- tions job at Douglas College. Heavy fines levied on crab poachers From page 5 van has been confiscated and a decision on his penalty is currently pending in North Vancouver pro- five got the key) s to your future! ME: : D. But Max Tscharre, a North Shore fisheries officer for the past 16 years, disagreed, saying the North Vancouver court system has been levying pretty heavy fines. A few years ago, he said three people were nabbed with 460 crabs and fined $1,000 each; one member of the trio was also sentenced to a day in jail. And se far this year, Tscharre has handed out about 50 tickets with fines ranging between $100 and $200. Tscharre said the fine system is $40 for the offence and $20 for each additional crab that is under- sized and each crab over the four-crab daily catch limit. Although DFO statistics weren't readily available, Tscharre said he doesn’t think violations are up significantly this year over past yeurs. But newer and crueler vio- lations, he said, have been occurring. “People are ripping off the pincers that have alt the meat and putting them in their pockets, then throwing the live crabs back into the water. Some people cook them tight on :he beach,”’ he said. While pincers will grow back, Tscharre said the crabs probably wouldn't five long, because they’ve lost their natural defence and means of obtaining food. Tscharre wants anyone seeing a crab fishing violation to report it to the Crab Watch 24-hour hotline at 666-3500. DAVID A. HOBBS & SHOPPERS DRUG MAST CORRECTION Re: May Circular, Vol. 25.
