: Seymour Art Gallery story ‘inaccurate anc offensive’ Dear Editor: I am writing to express my anger about a recent article reported by Evelyn Jacob. In the Wednesday, Oct. 23 North Shure News, Ms. Jacob wrote about the Seymour Art Galiery in the com- munity wing of Seyzove School. It is difficult to know whether Ms. Jaceb just couldn’t be bothered to find the whole story behind the iovation and surroundings of the gallery or whether she was just particularly cynical that day. {n a story about a local non- profit art gallery, the second sentence and subsequent several paragraphs are spent giving a completely inaccurate, unsup- ported and offensive commentary on Seycove students and their use of the gallery. I have been a teacher in Seycove School and coordinator in the community wing for six years and have only known the students to either erjoy the art in the gallery or to come into the community wing to participate in a variety of activities or volunteer oppor- unities provided by. the many programs sponsored by the Deep Cove/Dollarton Community Pro- grams Society. Young people have always been welcome and will continue to be so. To suggest their presence is only by way of conve- nience to the nearest parking lot is unfounded and absurd. Many children’s classes come through the S-ymour Art Gallery as well as secondary students reg- ularly visiting to critique and learn ‘from the various artists. Ms. Jacob’s off-handed comment about a leather clad student was particularly annoying. The young person about whom she spoke was an instructor in one of our sum- mer youth programs and as a result feels a close tie to the staff and community wing. These negative undertones con- tinued in the commentary on how the gallery was ‘‘sandwiched’’ in the wing between the offices with wall space for hanging ‘‘inter- rupted’’ by doors and windows. Again, if Ms. Jacob had taken the time to see what all the hustle and bustle was about and how the rest of the space was being used she would indeed have found numerous activities, programs and services being provided for the whole Deep Cove/Dollarton area. The gallery has always been ap- preciative of the Deep Cove/ Dollarton Community Programs Society and has relied on the community wing staff to assist with a variety of tasks when gallery staff or volunteers are not in the wing. The space is not large but is has certainly not discourag- ed the many volunteers who en- thusiastically and endlessly give their time to keep the Seymour Art Gallery operating. Your arti- cle, however, is discouraging. All of the activities that go on in the community wing of Seycove School, whether it be Seymour Art Gallery shows, youth outreach programs, special events, educa- tional, social or recreational pro- grams, heritage events, job re- entry programs, work orientation workshops, etc., take place under. crowded conditions but in the true spirit of cooperation between staff and community volunteers. Many community members and students have come by to com- ment on how offended and an- noyed they were by the article by Ms. Jacob. The students of Seycove are ter- DR.
