Cosmetics industry moves
away from animal testing

IN THE new-age ‘90s, concern for
the environment and social issues
has translated into an entirely new
wave of green marketing.

Products such as shampoo,
diapers, cleaning fluids and toilet
paper are being promoted as en-
vironmentally correct —
recyclable, environmentally friend-
ly, earth friendly and phosphate-
free —- not to mention new and
improved. In the cosmetics in-
dustry, similarly newfound con-
sumer-driven concerns have led
many companies to renounce
animal testing of their products.

The Body Shop (TBS), an in-

ternaiional retailer of skin and
hair care products that uses natu-
ral ingredients and traditional
practices, established a com-
prehensive policy against animal
testing of cosmetics, according to
a TBS press release that explains
TBS's policy against animal
testing.

When Anita Roddick founded
TBS in England in 1976, a
primary tenet of her corperate
philosophy was that her products
would be developed and produced
without animal testing because it
was cruel and inaccurate.

anti-animal testing bandwagon
didn’t even have wheels and our
stand opposing testing on animals
was an exceptional position for a
casmetic company to take. It was
an uphil! batt!e to bring the in-
dustry around to our point of
view. Now, many cosmetics man-
ufacturers around the world
recognize that animal testing is
cruel and it’s very encouraging
that alternative cruelty-free testing
is being recognized.”’

TBS continues to work to end
animal testing. It recently led a
multi-national effort that succeed-
ed in the revision of a European
Community draft directive that
would have required animal
testing of all existing cosmetic and
toiletry ingredients.

The Body Shop's policy against
animal testing has remained un-
changed for more than 15 years.
It does not test its products or in-
gredients on animals and will not
permit animal testing to be done
on its behalf. This poticy applies
to all Body Shop operaticns in
more than 39 countries and to its
products including Colourings, its
make-up line.

When TBS obtains an ingre-
dient from a supplier, that sup-
plier must sign an agreement
Stating that they are not testing
that substance on animais and
that they have not tested it on
animals for at least five years.
