New device will aid in catching drinking drivers

Both the North Vancouver
ROMP and the West Vancouver
Police are working for the first
time with roadside alcohol sereen-
ing devices.

The focal ROMP took delivery
of 10 of the units carlier this vear.
and the West Vancouver Police
have three.

According to the police, the
hand-held roadside screening
devices allow them to identify
drinking drivers who ‘tare moder-
ate drinkers.”

The devices have been in use
elsewhere in Canada since 1976.

Police will be able to identify
drivers who appear to have been
drinking within five and 15
minutes from when they had their
fast. drink. According to Miller,
refusal to submit to a roadside
screening device merits the same
potential penalty as refusing a
breathalyser demand.

Said Miller, ‘‘The roadside
screening device will assist a police
officer to pick up those individu-
als who have been consuming
alcohol and are perhaps consid-
ered moderate drinkers. They are
still over the legal limit of 80
milligrams and are considered im-
