High school playoffs begin

But Highway 99 rock slide throws a wrench into game schedules

PLAYOFF TIME — the most exciting time in high school
sports — is upon us in nine different activities, but this
year the Squamish Highway closure is creating havoc with

the schedules of many of them.

The schedule for the playoffs is
as follows:

@ Badminton (boys and _ girls):
The North Shore senior and
junior championships are set for
3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 at
Cellingwood and Argyle.

¢Cross Country (boys and
girls): The final league meet at
Sentinel was postponed to Oct. 31
at 3:30 p.m. due to the highway
slide. The zone meet to determine

— which start Oct. 30, will quali-
fy for the B.C. ‘“*AA" tournament
Nov. 8-50 at Hugo Ray. The
junior semi-finalists next week are
Handsworth ‘‘Blue’’, Coll-
ingwood, Sentinel and Hillside.

® Football (boys): Senior and
junior playoffs begin Nov. 9 and
7 respectively.

* Rugby (boys): The North
Shore junior final has Balmoral at
Carson Graham on Oct. 31. The

juvenile semis Nov. 2 will include
Balmoral, Carson Graham and
two others not yet decided. The
bantam semi-finals Oct. 29 has St.
Thomas Aquinas at Sentinel and
Balmoral at Carson Graham. All
games begin at 3 p.m.

e Soccer (boys): The B.C. zone
playoffs, which include North
Shore and Burnaby schools, saw
Burnaby Central take the first
berth to the B.C. championships
in Kamloops Nov. 8-10 with a 1-0
win over Argyle Wednesday.
Argyle and Sutkerland, 2-1 win-
ners over Alpha, can still get to
the provincial tourney.

The zone meet Oct. 28 at North
Vancouver Recreation Centre
from 3:30 to 8 p.m. will determine
five entries in each of 37 events to
go to the 3.C. meet at UBC Nov.
16-17.

* Volleyball (boys): Delayed by
the highway problem, the North
Shore finals are now expected to
be Nov. 6 at West Vancouver with
West Van meeting Sutherland in
the seniors and Brackendale in the
juniors.

© Volleyball (girls): North Shore
playoffs for seniors begin Nov. 1,
juniors Nov. 5 and for juvenile
and tantam Nov. 9.
