to target accident repairs

HAVE, YOU ever heard of the Automobilforsikringsselska-
bernes? How about the Bilskadekomiteen or Ansvar?

Respectively, they are insurance
companies or affiliated research
groups. from Denmark, Norway
and Sweden who are concerned
with automotive safety, design
and repair. They, along with
organizations from 10 other na-
tions, will be in Vancouver Sept. 9
to 14 as ICBC hosts the 1990 in-
ternational RCAR conference.

“RCAR” is the Research
Committee for Automobile
Repairs, and ICBC is one of only
two North American insurance
companies belonging to the com-
mittee. Members tali. to auto
makers about the cost of replace-
ment parts and offer suggestions
cn how vehicles can be designed
to better withstand damages in the
first place.

Through research, which some-
times involves crash testing,
RCAR-> members develop in-
novative repair techniques for
damaged vehicles and teach these
techniques to auto repairers. One
objective is to ensure that dam-
aged vehicles are properly repaired
and are safe to return to the

Delegates to the September
meetings will examine the latest
research findings on vehicle dam-
ageability, new workshop pro-
cedures and current developments
in automotive paint systems.
There will also be a special session
on security systems designed to
combat the rising problems of
theft from and theft of vehicles.

One of the highlights will be a
visit to ICBC’s Research and
Training Centre in Burnaby where
delegates will discuss crash testing

and pendulum impact testing.

Crash testing involves running a
vehicle into a concrete barrier.
This helps researchers gauge how
well the vehicle can withstand
crashes at various speeds and how
well the people inside are pro-
tected from injuries.

ICBC has also done some
leading-edge research with pen-
dulum impact testing. Using a
huge machine constructed by
UBC, researchers can ‘‘bump"
vehicles with a pendulum to simu-
late low-speed, low-impact acci-
dents.

High speed cameras help track
the flow of energy from the im-
pact as it moves through the vehi-
cle and the crash test dummies in-
side.

This research will possibly shed
some light on how soft tissue in-
juries such as whiplash occur, and
how severe those injuries are, rel-
ative to the damage done to the
vehicle.

Over the next few weeks, we'll
take a closer look at other types
of research being done by RCAR,
and what that may mean to the
design and repair of the vehicles
destined to be on the road in years
to come.
