‘Bordello mentality’ of
photos is disappointing

I read with great pleasure
Valerie Dare’s letter in the Aug. 16
North Shore News. It is both time-
ly and intelligently to the point.

May I add in support of it, that
J am genuinely dis:ppointed to see
the North Shore News has relapsed
into its former ‘‘bordeilo mentali-
ty’? — simpering Sunshine Giri in
seanty clothes demurely fingering
minimal underwear and all dut
sucking on a sticky regressive
thumb. Not exactly an inspiring
portrait of emerging womanhood.

Then there is the splendid sexist
sleaze cf your automotive ad:
bikini clad damsel reclining on an
automobile with caption cheerfully

Dear Editor:

in late June of this year | was a
guest in a lovely house in West
Vancouver. The view from this
residence is breathtaking except for
an area to the south.

A neighbor on the street below
has been allowed to let his trees
grow out of control and this
obliterates the remainder of this
magnificent view.

I cannot understand why this
would be allowed to continue
especially when all Vancouver res-
idents enjoy your scenery as much
as your visitors.

Even in the fast-growing city of
Toronto, where I reside during the
week, this situation would not be
aliowed, Every resident is wholly
responsible to keep Vancouver one
continual beautiful scene.

ism? Does the North Shore News
wish to convey, as the automotive
section ad does, that women, like
automobiles, are merchandise to
be bought and sold, and that good
old sex, domestic and non-
domestic, is a mechanical enter-
prise, a question of finely-tuned
meshing of gears?

I know any number of men both
simple and sophisticated who
would balk at that.

As Ms. Dare suggests the excuse
made would be but ‘‘sex sells,’ as
indeed it does to the morally and
socially retarded.
