GETTING 7HE MOST OUT OF BEDDING PLANTS
Here are a few tips that should save you time and money, and probably resultina 9
much improved show of colours this summer.
1. Choose only strong, vigorous plants. if you are unsure, compare 2 or3 sources.
Small plants may be severely set back or damp off if set out prematuraly. :
. Check your sun or shade locations, and verify plant preferences with your
nursery person. .
. Poor soil produces poor results. A couple of bags of mushroom manure worked §
into the soil is never amiss. Bedding areas should be thoroughly cultivated and §
kept that way. :,
. The two greatest enemies of bedding plants are insects and fungus diseases.
The former are easily controited by a number of good products, the best and 8
simplest to apply of which are probably the new ready-to-use insecticides in a §
plastic, trigger spray container. The latter can be effectively contained by apply:
ing a good quality fungicide in powder form at the time of planting.
. Afirst quality fertilizer is essential for good results, and for flowers and vegeta-
bles this should be 4-10-10 (8-20-20 is simply double strength) or the all-purpose jf
