VETERINARIAN Terry Lake is just one of the many animal doctors who cares for pets at the more than a dozen animal hospitals and clinics located on the North Shore. By MICHAEL BECKER Across the country, during Animal Health Week, which runs until Oct. 23, the focus is on what Lake and fellow veterinarians do in the way of providing ongoing pet care service to the community. The week is designated to raise public awareness of the role of animals in our society and to foster a sense of responsibility for animals, To forward the goal, local vets are speaking to schools and to the media. Individuals interested in seeing how a veterinary practice operates first-hand are encouraged to drop in to a local veterinary clinic or hospital. Said Lake: ‘‘Most clinics would be glad to show the facilities and (allow talks with) the staff.’’ Lake, 31, has been a practising veterinarian for the past 2% years. He trained at the University of Saskatchewan-based Western Col- lege of Veterinarian Medicine. The four-year veterinarian study pro- gram followed three years of pre- veterinarian science study at Simon Fraser University. Statistically, a North American household will include 2.3 pets. Lake says cats are by far the number one pet today. Said Lake: ‘‘We do see some birds, hamsters and gerbils. Each vet has different things he or she tends to stay away from. For ex- ample, I don’t handle reptiles, but Dr. Lilley does.’’ Forty to 50 per cent of the daily routine entails preventative care. Com- mon canine problems centre on skin problems and_ self-trauma from persistent flea scratching. The hospital also sees a lot of cats and dogs suffering fractures after being struck by motor vehicles. But said Lake, ‘‘It’s getting more and more frequent tc see complicated medical problems. The diagnostic ability has improv- ed dramatically over the last 10 years. For example, we can treat diabetes, cancer and heart disease in cats and dogs.” Lake’s focus is on preventative care for animals. ‘‘The people we see are the good pet owners, so it’s kind of like preaching to the con- verted. But too often we see animals coming in on an emergen- cy basis that have had no routine care. In general, ‘people are more and more responsible for their animals, You’re assuming a re- sponsibility for life. It’s more than just picking it up and feeding it.’’ Branches of the North Van- couver library are featuring animal displays in the children’s areas this week. The Canadian Veterinary Medi- cal Association will be presenting its first annual Pet Fair at the Robson Square Media Centre, I p.m, to 4 p.m., Sunday Oct. 25. On hand will be information displays from vets and other animal-care groups. There will also be demonstrations featuring obe- dience dogs, RCMP dogs and see- ing-eye dogs.
