Collins disputed

Dear Editor:

The ranting and ravings of Doug
Collins over South Africa are
becoming rather tiresome, and |
would ask by whose authority docs
this man deem to be an expert on
South Africa, or does he, as 1
suspect, obtain his propoganda
from some embassy somewhere?

Take his latest pathetic effort,
his review of Cry Freedom.

Mr. Collins states, ‘Crossroads
is a nest of black gang warfare.”
What utter rubbish! Those many
thousands of peuple living there
are not there by choice, they are a
by-product of apartheid, and the
gangs referred to are the Vigilantes
(Witdocke), who, backed by the
police and army, were there for the
express purpose of doing the gov-
ernment’s dirty work, the removal
of the residents by force.

Don't point fingers at the rest of
Africa, Mr. Collins, they inherited
a legacy of exploitation and
repression and their time in history
is yet to come, Check and see how
many of those countries you men-
tioned have the systematic separa-
tion of human ocings oy the color

of their skin, and the separating of
families, in their constitutions.

Yes, Mr. Collins, the 700 dead
school children in the film is incor-
rect, the figure is probably higher,
and will not be hidden in some
publication. No one will ever
know, thanks to the shutting down
of any accurate information leav-
ing the country.

Cry Freedoin is as close to the
truth as is possible to gct, under
the circumstances, and is a tribute
to a great South African and a
great film producer. The world
would never have known had it not
been for the courage of Donald
Woods.

Just in case you get your wires in
a knot, Mr. Collins, | am a white
South African-born Scot. | was
living less than 10 miles from the
Crossroads camp when the raids
took place and when Steve Biko
died.

T know, Mr..Coflins, about the
injustice there, [| lived through it;
and the winds of change are still
blowing in Africa, till aparthcid
has been eradicated.
