WEST VANCOUVER Student exchange foundation WEST VANCOUVER School approved Board has approved establishment of the Asia Pacific and West Vancouver’s Student Exchange Foundation (APWVSEF). West Vancouver's superiniend- ent of schools Bill May described the foundation as ‘ta unique way to promote more student ex- changes with Japan.” The foundation’s purpose is to fund student travel to Asia Pacific countries when authorized by the board, through receiving, investing and administering bequests, gifts and endowments. The board's financial planning committee, May said, is now Icok- ing into how to implement the APWVSEF. Its first task will be to invite members of the public to “serve on its board of directors. Financial assistance for student exchanges is important, said May, because of the increasing expense due te. fluctuating currency rates and rising airfares. The problem of how to attract financial assistance for students was given to a board sub-commit- tee consisting of parents Marlene Lougheed, Ann McArthur, Dawn Sikula, and teachers Cam Kerr, Kit Krieger and Lloyd Wrean. Don Fietcher, the board’s district administrator and the committee’s chairman, said that his committee's recommendations represented the results of a year of planning and discussion. The idea for a foundation was obtained by his committee from Shimizu, Japan, where a_half- million dollar trust fund has been set up to finance student ex- changes. The committee also concluded that an annual fund of $50,000 from earned or investment income would be a reasonable amount to set aside to subsidize such ex- changes. May points out that West Van- couver has been two years ahead of the Ministry of Education in By OLGA RUSKIN Contributing Writer seeing the importance of B.C.’s relationship with Pacific Rim countries. The ministry this fall has an- nounced its three-year, $12 million Pacific Rim Initiatives Fund for , developing innovative educational programs to prepare students for B.C.’s growing trade relationship with the Pacific Rim. But the West Vancouver School District established a Pacific Rim program at West Vancouver Sec- ondary two years ago because of Vancouver's Asia Pacific ties. “The Far East is the Near West for Vancouver,’ explains Bill May. In addition to the West Van- couver Secondary program, the district has had student exchanges involving approximately 100 stu- dents during the course of the past two school years with two schools in Shimizu. Last summer 10 girls from Sen- dai, Japan, attended “summer school in West Vancouver, and next summer West Van students will go to Sendai. Though funding is now available for student exchanges and other cultural programs from the ministry’s fund, May estimates it could cover anly one West Van- couver student. But a minimum of 15 students (half from Sentinel and half from West Van Secondary) will be going to Shimizu this spring on the district’s student exchange. May also points out that Asia Pacific countries other than Japan could be included in the student exchange program. 13 + Sunday, December 20, 1987 - North Shore News A STORE FULL OF PERFECT CIFTS | save Pioneer 69/40 Pullover Water Resistant Smaller adults & kids sizes only MADE IN VANCOUVER Reg.
