Director of planning for West Vancouver Steve Nicholls said he is currently studying the proposal and will present a report to council on the environmental and social impact of such a project. A March 1984 report into the recreational requirements for undeveloped areas of West Van- couver concluded there was no room for new golf facilities below the 1,200-foot level, but ‘there is fast and easy access to the already reserved golf course area in the lower Hollyburn region for sum- mer golf’’, which is the area envi- sioned for the course by Robert Annable, president of Ancore In- _. ternational (Canada) Ltd. Annable said the need for a new public golf facility in West Van- couver has grown with the municipality’s population and golf's popularity. “West Vancouver is one of the few municipalities that does not have an 18-hole public golf course,’? Annable said. ‘‘And a community as affluent as West Vancouver should have 18 holes of public golf. There have been no new holes of golf built in West Vancouver for 50 years. The course availability for young golfers or those wanting to learn the game is just not there.’” Annable said figures show the Lower Mainland is currently short 500,000 rounds of golf per year. But Save Cypress Bow! Commit- tee spokesman John Beltz said Wednesday a golf course in the area would increase traffic up the mountain, ‘‘and I would say it would be inconsistent with the municipal pian for the area. It should be set aside for wilderness-oriented activities not By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter city-style sports like golf.’ Annable estimated that, depen- ding on the final configuration of the golf course, the development could take up to two years to complete and cost several million dollars.
