Restoration considered

THE RESTORATION of the old ferry building at the foot
of 14th Street in West Vancouver is one step closer to being
undertaken as a heritage project when funding becomes

available.

Monday, district council decided
to inform the B.C. Heritage Trust
of its intent to take the restoration
of the building on as one of two

In the report, social planner
Richard Wagner called the existing
inventory, ‘‘a good start,’’ but
called for more work to te done
on it. Provincial funds are
available to hire a consultant to
carry out the $10,000 to $12,000
project.
Provincial funds on a 50-50
basis would also be available for
the exterior restoration of the ferry
building, which” most recently
served as a bus depot. The restora-
tion has recejved a great deal of
public support.

of the ferry building, but a petition
of 300 like-minded West Van resi-
dents has been collected.

Although other groups have
claimed that the building was not
worth saving, Ald. Mark Sager
said that prior to restoration, the
Sager building in Dundarave also
looked fit for no more than demo-
lition.

Following another recommenda-
tion made in the heritage report,
council decided to consider the
formation of a new West Van-
couver Heritage Advisory Com-
mittee.

FOR GIRL Guide Shannon
Macrae, Monday’s North Van-
couver City Council meeting was
‘‘interesting’’ even though she did
not understand all that was hap-
pening.

“Some of it I didn’t really
understand,’’ said Macrae, 11,
who attended the meeting as part
of the requirements to win her Girl
Guides’ citizenship badge.

In addition to attending the
mecting, the badge requirements
call for a test where Macrae has to
name municipal, provincial and
federal politicians.

A visit to the citizenship court
will complete all the badge’s re-
quirements.
