Lifestyles — Summer workshops to be held in France STUDENTS AT Paul and Babetre Deggan’s Summer Centre for the Arts in Montaigut-le-Blane, France are always captivated by the beauty of its romantic setting. A medieval hill-village in the Auvergne, Montaigul-le-Blanc overlooks valleys with vineyards, acres of sunflowers, and wheat fields sprinkled with red poppies. The Arts Centre, summer home of the Deggan family from North Vancouver, is the site of summer workshops in painting and the French language, offered in con- junction with Capilano College. Canadians of al! ages and academ- ic levels take the classes, while ex- ploring French culture, focal cuisine and wines. Established in 1980 in several village houses, the centre has been expanding with the gradual pur- chase and restoration of village property. In the last two years a spacious studio has been built in the ruins of an old barn. PAINTING WORKSHOPS The three-week painting workshops are conducted by Paui Deggan, a painter, sculptor and art instructor at Capilano College. Students in the two-week lan- guage workshops, held in June and July, are encouraged to get involv- ed in daily village activities, which are simultaneously fun and educa- tional. Degvan’s Parisian wife, Babette, a former French instruc- tor at Capilano College and Simon Fraser University, is hostess and guide to the students, along with instructors Louise Cantin and Carole Clement. PARIS Both painting and language stu- dents may also take advantage of optional weeks in Paris and Aix- en-Provence with a guide. This is aun opportunity to view the great art collections and practise newly- acquired French, as well as com- plementing the experience of stay- ing in a small village. The workshop fee of $1100 Ca- nadian for painting or languages includes tuition, accommodation, excursions, meals and wine, but {rave} to France is extra. Brochures on the workshops are available from Capilano College Extension Programs, 2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver, B.C. V7J 3H5 (984-4907). Travel arrangements are being handled by Jan Bell-Irv- ing of P. Lawson Travel at 682- 4272. For more information on the Summer Centre for the Arts, in- terested persons may also contact Paul or Babette Deggan at 986- 0082.
