Mailbox _ NV District not a baby- sitter Dear Editor: Tragic as the recent accidents in Lynn Canyon were, | cannot agree with your editorial (sce North Shore News, Sunday, July 20) that one measure to prevent further ac- cidents might be to erect unclim- bable barbed wire fencing of the type surrounding prisons, maybe even harmlessly electrified. corrects | Dear Editor: tam writing on an article which appeared in the May 16 edition of the North Shore News by Doug Collins, a copy of which I have enclosed. It refers to the fund-raising letter which Mr. Collins received from Amnesty International and Oscar Peterson. While I disagree with the article, my main reason for writing is to draw your attention to the several inaccuracies and untruths in the article. . First of all, Mr. Collins’ asser- tion that Oscar Peterson ‘‘the piano player” is dead is (to para- phrase Mark Twain) greatly exag- gerated. Oscar Peterson, the world renown jazz pianist is ver, much alive and lending his generous support to Amnesty International. Secondly, the statement that Oscar Peterson is not a doctor is wrong. Eight universities have bestowed doctorates upon him. Thirdly, ‘‘selective indignation’’ is something that Amnesty Inter- national does not practise. The organization opposes human rights abuses wherever they occur. In the Jast annual report, for ex- ample, Amnesty International re- corded human rights violations in 123 countries including all the countries Mr. Collins listed. Mr. Collins suggested that Dr. Peterson and Amnesty Interna- tional are responsible for unrest in South Africa through disinvest- ment policies. This is false. Amnesty International has never called for sanctions or disinvest- ment in South Africa or any other country. Amnesty International’s main technique in attempting to make governments live up to their main human rights obligations is massive letter writing campaigns. Finally, Mr. Collins attempts to link Amnesty International with Nelson Mandela by insinuating that if Amnesty International’s ef- forts are successful the terrorists will rule Scuth Africa. Amnesty International works only for the immediate and un- conditional release of people who have been imprisoned because of their background or because of the non-violent expression of their beliefs. For this reason Nelson Mandela is not an Amnesty Inter- national prisoner of conscience and the organization does not work for his release. Mr. Collins’ article lacks an understanding of Amnesty Inter- national and demonstrates a callous disregard for facts and ob- jectivity. In short his article is poorly researched and reflects bad- ly on your newspaper. I feel that Mr. Collins has done your readers 4 great disservice. 1 trust that I can call upon your in- tegrity as an editor to ensure that reasoned, balanced and factual ar- ticles appear in the North Shore News in the future. Gladys MacPherson Acting Press and Information Officer Amnesty International These accidents did not occur because of inadequate warnings. There are signs pointing to the danger as well as fences to stop those who come too close to the danger area. District council must continue to provide adequate safety measures but, in the last analysis, every in- dividual has to accept the respon- sibility for his own safety. We cannot expect the municipal government to baby-sit each and every ciizen. Ernie Crist, Alderman, District of North Vancouver custom draperies by S.
