Ao - Friday, November 9, 1984 - North Shore News News Viewpoint OUR Gardens he news that the Park & Tilford Gardens may finally close on Nov. 30--- just’ about the time their famous Christmas lights were about to go on in other years---must come as a Shock to thousands of people, now only on the North Shore but throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond. For the North Shore the Gardens are a major year-round tourist attraction with many spin-off benefits for local businesses. Over the past 15 years they have delighted more than 3.5 million visitors from near and far. For the entire region they rank, in a very real sense, as ‘‘our’’ Gardens. That being so, why has the public been left uninvolved until it is now suddenly faced with a deadline only three weeks away? Negotiations between North Van City and Schenley Distillers have apparently been go- ing On Since last spring, when the shutdown of the distillery was announced, but neither side is willing, even now, to discuss prog- ress---if any. Why not? Continuation of the Gardens could ob- viously require public money. But how much? And in what form? We suggest the Gardens are too important to remain the problem of the City alone. It is at least en- titled to seek the support of the two other North Shore municipalities for any viable proposals. There could be a good case for the facility to be taken over by the GVRD. And opportunity should be given (as with the Stanley Park whale pool) for private dona- tions. But nothing can be done until the inex- plicable veil of secrecy is lifted. And time is now perilously close to running out. Food for thought he food over which Oakalla inmates rioted this week with $30,000 damage to the jail has been described by impartial samplers as well up to airport and hospital meals standards. So how about donating the ingredients for oa month to the Food Bank with the latter supplying each prisoner, in return, with a typical week's han- dout' bag while supplies lasted? That) might finally give inmates the food for thought now supplied to thousands of their fellow- Canadians outside. nae Teliaaleehaeniasiliah namin aan Display Advertising 980-0511 north shore Classified Advertising 986 6222 news Newsroom 985 2131 RETOUR STEERER EET TER Circulation 986 1337 Subscriptions 985 2131 1138 Lonsdale Ave North Vancouver BC VIM 2H4 Publisher tete cy & Aosvoctate Publisher t ditor in Chiet Ve toe 4 ro hey "ain Ww a tole ny re Porsonnel Otreoctor (Classified Manage: rhe ‘ eyte : hab KA Prva Produc thon Dirac tor Photography Manager worth Shore Nows " ” ‘ ‘ deny bs Yous . toa “a “a vob ute oa Newbee en ce se Me ety 1 re) eo oom ke st rr we ts “ Ane trttce Contents .
