WEST VANCOUVER Police are gearing up to
augment that community’s emergency evacuation
systems by bringing the network of Block Parents

into the picture.

The proposal for the pro-
gram — which could be used
to reach more than 30 thou-
sand people in the event of
the emergency — has met
with enthusiastic response
from Block Parents.

Cst. Dave Marskell of
West Vancouver Police’s
crime prevention unit, who
has proposed the program,
says the aim is not to put the

Block Parents into competi-
tion with other emergency
groups but to add to the ser-
vices already available.

if the program is adopted,
evacuation instructions
would be passed from police
to an over-all Block parent
coordinator. In turn, the
information would be passed
along to individual Block
Parents who would then
assist in neighborhood evac-
uation.

Block Parents would not
be responsible for the actual

evacuation but would work
with. police, Emergency
Measures Organization
members and others if help is
needed.

According to Marskelil’s
proposal, the system would
be set up in such a way that
all or part of the system could
be activated in response to
specific threats.

Marcskell has discussed the
program with Block Parent
coordinators and has receiv-
ed an enthusiastic response.

He is asking Block Parents
to contact their coordinators

in their area for further
details on the proposed
program.
