Ihave long adyocated that r ° oe wale ou oss rey » nt _— - ae ‘yes ane an tT running room Dear Editor: An article appeared in Weekend magazine, June 27, headed “Parenting: Public Affairs”, dealing with the behaviour of small children in public. An example of “bad” behaviour is given, the small child running away from the adult in charge of it. “The fact that mother is chasing her, encouraged Joanne to keep on running.” The child is said to be deliberately annoying the parent. Children are not adults but humans in the process of development. As soon as they acquire the ability to walk and run, they in- tuitively desire to practise this skill as much as possible in order to grow up into strong, healthy adults. This urgent desire is frustrated by their being kept most of the time in houses filled with furniture and grounds enclosed by fences. There ts nowhere to run and run. So confronted by a marvellous space, little children are impelled to take advantage of this. They are not doing it to annoy the ’ c: giants, the adults who rule their lives. The tantrums referred to in the article are a sign that children feel they are in an adult world, hostile to them. Aren't they? Freda Handford West Vancouver What became of MY letter? West Van Mayor Hypmphrey’s suggestion of the railway deserves serious consideration. Nd-one on District council *presented any convincing arguments why planning for such an extension shouldn't Start now. The need for it grows aimost daily. Just think what will happen when . the new 60,000 seat stadium is completed at B.C. Place and the traffic jams that will ‘bring to the 2nd Narrows and Lions Gate bridges! Let's not forget that Seymour is gradually being opened up and developer pressure for still more rapid development is growing. If past experience means anything, then it should be clear that it will take 5 to 10 years to even plan a light rapid transit extension to the North Shore and at least as much time again to build it. - The time to start planning for North Shore rapid transit is now. Also it is ludicrous to work on a community plan as we are doing without knowing where the rapid transit corridors will be. Right now the GVRD has no plans to extend rapid transit to the North Shore and is, in fact, opposed to it. Ald. Powell, our representative on the GVRD should’ be a “mover and a shaker.” He ‘should be demanding that the GVRD take up the issue—not sitting back and waiting~-for the GVRD (to initiate something. The question arises: just why is the majority on District council so reluctant io take any effective action now on rapid transit? The only conclusion I can reach pre-season fall values is that the reasons. are political. They are afraid or .. unwilling to make any > demands on the provincial , government. Either that, or they are still pipe dreaming | ‘about a third crossing for cars? It is a fact that the GVRD cannot extend rapid transit to the North Shore without the agreement of the provincial government, which is not in favor of any such extension. So our council, rather than pressure or embarrass or offend the provincial government, sits back and does nothing on the issue. Is this leadership, or is this” “mee-too-ism?” If we don’t fight for it, we'll never get it. And let’s: * start now, not 10 years from now when we'll be facing a real crisis in transportation.
