B4-Wednesday, October 8, 1980 - North Shore News sport SOMETHING IN A NAME Junior Esks dominate SL football action The undefeated Junior bantam Eskimos continued to dominate their Gordon Sturtridge League division with a 26-0 thrashing over the last place Vikings, Sunday. But, while the first placed team was having an easy go of it, the real battle was going on in the trenches between the Stamps and the Steelers. The Stamps nipped the Steelers 18-13, and in doing so moved into a threeway tie for third place. The Steelers, Stamps and Chargers all have a piece of third place with three and two records. Kurt Larson opened up the scoring in the first quarter for the Stamps when he romped.60 yards around .. the end for a touchdown. Steelers were able to reply before’ the quarter was ended on a two yard quarterback sneak by Shezad Somji. That play was set up by Chris Rerup when he ran 50 yards on an end around. Mark Wietig scored for the Stamps in the second quarter on a seven yard dive and later scored in the third quarter on a 30 yard pass and run. Wietig, playing only his second game of the season, put in a strong effort on defense as well. Joe Morrison put the Steelers back in the game in the fourth quarter when he picked up a fumble and scored a major. Jared Birkeland. Mike Horvath and Dave Haywood all played strong defensive games for the winning side Keith McIntosh and Mike Nex put in solid defensive effortsin a losing cause In the Eskimo game, Mark Davis, David Shera and Craig Morgan all notched one touchdown. Grant O’Keen and Mike Enns played well on defense for the winners. In other Junior Bantam action, the Chargers dropped a 24-6 decision to the Squamish chiefs. Martin Bauchman was the lone scorer of the Chargers. The Colts remained un- defeated in Bantam division play as they trounced the Broncs 24-0. Chris Benjamin — scored twice and David Treharme once for the Colts. Quar- terback David Henderson passed for over two hundred yards. . Kevin Chambers and Rich Henderson were the defensive stalwarts for the winning side. In other Bantam action, the Falcons dumped the Packers 21-7 behind touchdowns by Darren White, Chris Stigter and Mitch Solomon. The Lions blanked the Browns 14-0 on touchdowns by Jeff Werrun and Correy Manns. Darren Spurin was the defensive star for the winners, while Phillip Mitchell put in a sohd two- way for the Browns. Scott Finlay scored three majors to lead the Roughies to a 266 romp over the Bombers. Andrew MacRae rounded the scoring out with bis touchdown.
