C6-Wednesday, February 6, 1980 - North Shore News On WAIKIKI! Right now, [ am taking my life in my hands, standing up straight, and announcing: “! HATE THE PLACE” What an awtul thing to do instead of a holiday! trayel- by Barbara McCreadie Flabby tourists line the beaches, towel to towei. Sidewalks are as congested as buses at rush-hour. Driving is an invitation to disaster: Systems of one-way streets go nowhere = and suddenly become two-way with little warning. Parking is hopeless! Subtract the heat and the aloha shirts and you might just as well be in downtown New York during a subway stnke. Shopping? Miles and miles of stores litter the streets, ail selling the same trash. Bus- loads of Japanese ‘ourists march through in waves, ail anxious to keep up with s guide who took his training in the Boston Marathon. They don’t dare let him out of sight because many don't speak English and are ternfied of getting lost. “Barbara! Your kids will be bored stiff on Maui. You must let them have a couple of days in Honolulu! Poor deprived little kids! Nothing to do but beachcomb. Show them the bright lights and the joys of Waikiki.” Like an idiot, | took that bad advice. After four - days of Waikiki, | asked my “poor deprived kids” how they liked the place. “Yetch!” said one. ‘I'm glad you brought us here.”, said another “! didn't oeheve you when you told us it was the pits. Now | dol” “Please, Mom, NEVER AGAIN'”. announced the third. “The sirens and the traffwe have kept me awake for four mghts ~ Ellie Hender MANAGER 1112 Kapilano 100 ark Royal South West Van ouver EMEP etek Bb nee 4 Atl agreed that Honolulu was only useful as a place to catch another plane to one of the outer islands. “Do you think that they'll ever have a direct flight to Maui so we wont have to come here at all’ Asked one daughter. The gal at tlic desk offered a “take-out or delivery” menu from a place called MAGOOS PIZZA. Expecting the worst, | called in an order. An hour later, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the whole dinner was quite acceptable and under $20 for five. Chicken dinners at $3.40 included four pieces of chicken, French fries and corn-on-the-cob. The “Super Sub Sandwiches” were large and the buns were fresh. One “Baby-size” pizza left enough over for three midnight snacks — one piece each for kids. It wasn't quite like dining at the “Ritz”, but as a desperation measure it beats walking through a rainstorm. One night, Bnan and I decided on another “getaway”. No plans, no reservations, just walk until we found someplace. We found CHUCK’S at 247 Lewers St. By following the arrows through a junk shop and heading down a flight of Stairs, you'll find it without much trouble. Always careful, | asked a couple of tourists on their way oul, “How's the food?” “Great. Try the prme ribs.” We did and they really were great. Salad bar, en- tertainment and = decent prices. I'd go back. If shopping is your “joy and delight”, the Ala Moana Mall is the place. { tet the rest of my maniac family brouse around while | headed for a bookshop. We had breakfast at Smitty's Pancake house. Fair. if you have ae car, Foodland Market in the same Mall is a good place to pick up emergency supplies. Otherwise, don't buy too much because fighting brown paper sacks on crowded buses isn’t fun. Speaking of cars, we rented one from the airport from Dollar-Rent-A-Car. They picked us up at the airport, rented us a Datsun standard for $13.95 and returned us to the airport on our way out. It was cheaper than taking a cab trom the airport to a hotel. Even though we didn't use the car fur one full day. | think we probably saved money by renting for the full ume, One day we drove to some beaches outside of Honolulu for a few hours. Un- fortunately, all of us were spoiled by Maui where we could step right out of our building onto lovely sandy beach and rinse off the sand in the shower on the patio. As always, we treated ourselves to a superb restaurant for our last night in Hawaii. This time we chose the Safari Room in the Sheraton Waikiki. The food was fine, if not spectacular. The bill, including tip and a bottle of wine was ninely dollars for five. Our waiter was charming! I chose the Madras Curry and he began to explain to me that the order came with rice and CARRAS. “Excuse me, but what is CARRAS?", expecting some exotic condiment. He looked puzzied for a minute and then brightened. In his best Hong Kong English he announced, “Ah. But it is what see wabbits eat! See? CHOMP CHOMP!” Meanwhile, he did a fantastic impersonation of a rabbit with a carrot! Aloha to exotic dining for a while! I'd better go throw some carras in my stew! On our flight home, Wardair was very generous with the dmnks. Knowing that Brian didn't have to drive home from the airport, 1 didn't swing into my usual routine: “Make that coffee on the rocks!” I expected our trip through Canada Customs would) go smoothly. But. | hadn't counted on two anemic-looking coconuls causing any problem. Our two youngesi daughters purchased them at the Honolulu airport to bring back to school. After we passed through the first set of custom's officials, we got shifted over to the Agriculture In- spectors. “How many in your party?”, the girlinquired. “Twenty-four im- migrants'”, announced dear husband, with a_ lopsided grin. “Five, all Canadians,” I quickly amended. They inspected the lousy coconuts and - pronounced them OK. “What's in that package?” was the next question, in- dicating a large box we were carrying. “Torpedoes!” claimed my husband. “A radio from the duty- free shop,” I yiped. “See, the bill is ghued on the side.” Luckily, they didn't take him seriously or 1d probably be writing this column from the local lock-up. themselves ‘oTo have been appearing in photo feature 's a constant delight to readers, advertisers. and the modets el tou wile te TRAVEL ESCAPING THE PEOPLE, this tourist takes to the sea INFORMATION away from the busy beach GORDON HANNA in Hawaii. 987-9501 4 as ‘Sunshine’ Girls’ This the NEWS for years if you want a paid modelling assignment as a NEWS Sunshine Girl | want to hear from you Write to me at the NORTH SHORE NEWS and in Clude In your letter a recent photograph and your phone number {il Call you as soon as | can and Set up an appomtment Ellsworth Dickson 1139 Lonsdale Avenue.
