Patients can also come to hospital the morning of their operation with the Same Day Surgery Program, “The best thing about coming into hospital the same day of the operation is being able to get a good night's Sleep al home,” says Lynne Black; a patient recently admitted to the Same’ Day Surgery Program for lap-coli. Better utilization of hospital services is a top priority at LGH. As Utilization Coordinator for Lions Gate Hospital, Dr. Brent Brown has several successes to his credit. Since his appointment in 1990, he and his team have assessed and evaluated numerous programs and services, seeking to create efficiencies and better quality care. "Staying in a basic hospital bed costs $508 a night,” says Dr. Brown." Costs for specialized areas are even higher. When we review services, we look for win-win-win solutions-improving care to the patient and improving efficiencies for service providers and the hospital." Many treatments require patients to receive medica- tions and other fluids via an ‘TV’, or intravenous, often for several days or weeks. In October 1992, a new Hospital-Coimmutnity Partnership, the Home [V Program, enabled patients without complications to have their IV's administered at home. Last year 26 patients used the program, saving 271 bed-days, or $137,000. Psychiatry Success Stories That Paid Off! Home iV Program physiotherapy, occupational therapy, homemak- ing- they are elegible fer this program which has saved over 6500 bed-ca years. Same Day Surgery This program reduces the time spent in hospital before an operation. Pre-surgery tests are done the week before on an outpatient basis, allowing surgical patients to come to hospital the morning of their operation. In it’s first year, 325 bed-days were saved, growing to 571 days in year two. Improvements in the psychiatric program resulted in patients spending an average of 4.6 less days in hospital. This efficiency allows be seen per year, reducing the waiting time for a bed. A further benefit was being able to reallocate some funds to provide psychiatric services in the Emergency Department. Quick Respose Program This Hospital-Community Partnership Program with North Shore Health, based in the Emergency Department, helps patients go home sooner and even prevents admission to hospital in some circumstances. If North Shore patients are well enough to go home with home support-nursing, 25% more patients to New Technology New technology can significantly: improve diagnosis and care. In 1990, Lions Gate Hospital received a $60,000 donation for a set of instru- ments for laparoscopic cholestectomies-gall bladder surgery using new techniques. This surgery requires smaller incisions, reducing the healing time in hospital by about 5 days per patient..The hospital's Auxiliary donated $60,000 for a. second set of instruments, enabling us to perform 8 of these surgeries a week (these tools can be used only once per day as sterilization takes 15 hours). Over 500 lap-coli's have bee + doné since 1990. : ms aA ‘ay Happy Hanowe®™ The Emergency staff wish all young ghouls and goblins safe trick or treating! ¢ Avoid burns and eye injuries-fireworks and fire crackers should be used only with adult supervision. , Trick or treaters should be accompanied by parents, carry flashlights and wear costumes visible to night drivers. » Prevent slips and falls.
