Puzzled by News’ coverage of recent nomination meeting Dear Editor: | am writing to express some concern over the publication of an article concerning a recent Nominating meeting. The person wha was nominated received a significant amount of coverage on page three, which is prime location in your paper. While 1 think it was fortunate for that person, a candidate for a political party that has never run candidates before, to have received such coverage, 1 am wondeving why. : As’ you may recall, on April 26, 1990, 1 was nominated to be the . FIDP candidate in the provincial ’ constituency, of North Van- couver-Seymour. , | Many of your readers would not _ know the exact’ date because your Paper did not report.the fact that I was nominated until. about one month later. And when you did report my nomination, it was one sentence in an article about the Hon. Jack Davis. At the time I found it puzzling Close bond with Canada Dear Editor: _ As one who doesn’t mind being called a racist (which means I’m glad to be English and feel a close bond with Canada), may I hastea -.- to send belated support to your .' first-rate columnist Doug Collins? Y have read a copy of his “Presentation to North Vancouver City Council’. on June 7, and 1 agree with every word. “We have the. same problems here: mass immigration (which no - ‘one’ wanted or, was consulted about) with’ a corresponding in- crease in unemployment, itinesses, violence and drug-taking; an at- tack. on free speech in the race - relations laws which makes it.an "offence ‘to say what. one thinks Thanks for keys “Dear Editor: ey ‘<1 hope ,. the. person “who ' found my key ring on Satur- ‘day, Aug. 18, at: Horseshoe: ‘Bay, reads the. He had all the keys. Rather, he’ put a note on my. vehicle, informing me where he had left the keys for safe keeping. ~T am deeply grateful to this honest, caring person. Thank you. n ‘Joyce Lydiard North Vancouver that your paper did not sce fit to report on my nominating mecting even though, when [ was nominated, the polls indicated that the NDP would win the election. When I read the article that you published on Sunday, Aug. 8, 1 was a bit surprised, since I recall how your paper completely ignored my nomination even though, for an area that is only half of North Vancouver federal tiding, more people attended my nominating meeting than attended the one that you reported on. The reason that freedom of the press is so important in a deino- cratic society is that the public has an expectation that the informa- tion they receive from the press is as accurate, unbiased, and com- plete as possible. - The public must have accurate and complete information if they are to make informed choices. I would hope that your paper would take its responsibility to the public nore seriously. Deminique Roelants Ledysmith, B.C. about the ‘multi-cultural socie- ty’; a Parliament which no longer represents the peopic; and a news-media controlled by those who are deliberately trying to destroy patriotism (one of the ob- jectives of the Communist Manifesto) and to mongrelize the world. All this arises from the manip- ulation of the world by the wrong people, through their control of the meney supply. The issue of currency ought to be taken out of private hands and restored to sovercign states. Good luck, Doug Collins! - H. Over the coming weeks you will be considering if and how you will vote in the election. They're important decisions. You deserve to know more about me, why I decided to run, the issues as [see them, where [stand and why | believe I can earn your trust and your vote, WHO AM I? I'm 38 years old and have lived in BC since birth. I'm the third generation of my family to live in North Vancouver, | was born in Kamloops, raised and educated in Prince George. As publisher and editor, [ have built my career and my business as a thoughtful analyst and a knowledgeable critic of Government operations and the bureaucracy. ‘The demand by Canadians for change in the way government works—and Kim Campbell’s commitment to a new Style of leadership—convinced me I could contribute by seeking public office. | subsequently won the nomination to represent the Progressive Conservative Party in North Vancouver. WHY AM I RUNNING? Um angry and frustrated, Governments have lost touch, My business required that J take a very keen, active interest in public affairs and the policies of . Government. What | saw and read convinced me that their priorities didn’t match either what's affordable or what’s important to people here in Narth Vancouver. | Writing and talking about the need for change wasn't cnough, To make change happen, you have to get involved. { made that personal commitment when it became obvious that Prime Minister Kim Campbell _was dedicated 10 making real, meuningfu! changes to Government and the way it operates. With the support of the people of this Riding, 1’d like to help her do that. WHAT DO [WANT TO ACCOMPLISH FOR NORTH VANCOUVER? The priorities, as [ see them now, can be summa- rized under three broad headings. 1. Take specific actions to reduce federal spending and ensure a more affordable Government. @ Wiser, more carefully chosen spending priorities. @ Eliminate the deficit by reducing spending not raising taxes. @ Open the budget making process, @ Hold MP's accountable for Government spending. 2. Approve firm policies to renew the public trust and ensure Government is responsive to citizens. @ When f make a promise, I'll keep it. @ Ensure constituents have more opyortunily to influence MP’s activities in Ottawa. @ Seta reporting schedule to guarantee accountability. @ Listen Make our neighbourhoods free from fear. eo Amend the Young Offenders Act. @ Strengthen the Criminal Code and Parole Act to protect society from dangerous criminals. @ Reinforce local police forces so they can deal more effectively with violent crime. Over the course of the next several weeks I will be presenting more specifics to detail the proposals for change I've outlined above. I'll also be asking for your help to add to them. WHY I BELIEVE I WILL BE THE . BEST REPRESENTATIVE FOR. NORTH VANCOUVER? My hands-on, success- ful efforts as a small businessman give me a realistic perspective on the challenges. I have specific propos- als to offer on issues that are important to the voters of North Vancouver, ; ; But most of all, [sincerely believe that change must take place in the way Government operates and Kim Campbell is the onlv leader who offers us the opportu: nity and the plan for real change. { will be asking for your vote soon and I hope fe can count on your support.
