ry 18 ~ Friday, July 14, 1989 - North Shore News THE VoIce OF NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER SUNDAY + WEDNESDAY - FRIDAY DEAL ENERGY-ABSORBING HUB - Safety steering wheel makes its debut on ‘89 Chevy Cavalier A NEW GM-designed ‘‘self-align- ing’? safety steering wheel makes its debut on the 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier. The new steering wheel, devel- oped by General Motors Research Laboratories and Inland Division, is an outgrowth of the energy- absorbing steering wheel introduc- ed by GM nearly 20 years ago. The new design features a unique energy-absorbing hub in- corporating six small deformable legs. In a crash, the metal legs in- stantly adjust at the hub to bring the wheel parallel to the chest of the driver, helping to spread the force of the impact and reduce chest injuries. While the new wheel is designed to perform well in a crash situation to protect the driver, it has the / lassifie look and feel of a serious driving wheel. For 1989, Cavalier continues as one of the country’s most complete car lines, offering four body styles, three series and a wide variety of available equipment. Base Cavaliers are offered as two-door coupes, four-door sedans and four-door wagons. The sporty Cavalier RS is available as a coupe and sedan. Cavalier’s hot Z26 series rolls into 1989 as a coupe or convertible. Gas-pressurized shocks on Z24 give it an even quicker, more responsive handling feel. In addition to the new energy- absorbing safety steering wheel, standard features on all Cavaliers include new ihree-point rear shoulder belts and new Delco bath “deflected disc”’ front struts for an improved ride. An engine block heater is now standard on all models. Other standard features are power brakes, composite halogen headlamps, sportmirrors, all- season steel-belted radial tires and a five-speed manual transmission. A three-speed automatic is op- tional on most models. Cavalier’s proven 2.0 litre four- cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection delivers 90 hp at 5600 rpm, along with these easy-care features: a serpentine drive-belt that should never need tensioning, computer-controlled coil ignition that eliminates the need for period- ic timing adjustment and highly accessible routine maintenance points. The RS model is more com- prehensive in 1989. Standard equipment includes black-accented exterior trim, dual sport mirrors, iarger P195/705-14 steel-belted ra- dial touring tires on 14’? -rally wheels, FE2 sport suspension, power steering and full instrumen- tation with trip odometer and ta- chometer, tinted glass, power trunk release, lighting package and an electronically tuned AM-FM stereo radio. Cavalier Z24, the hot one in- spired by Corvette and Camaro, gets a new custom cloth interior with deeply contoured front bucket seats. and a split-back folding rear seat on the coupe. Complete analog instrumenta- tion is standard; an electronic gauge cluster is optional. auto ads: see page Z24’s performance hardware in- cludes a standard 2.8 litre V6 with multi-port fuel injection, Getrag- designed 5-speed manual transmis- sion, P215/60R-i4 Eagle GT+4 tires on cast-aluminum wheels and an FE3 sport suspension with new Delco gas-charged shocks. Bright argent rocker panel ex- tension moldings, air induction hood, Z24 grille with red ‘bowtie emblem and black body side moldings all. contribute to Z24’s exterior styling. On the Z24 convertible, addi- ticnal body structure provides bet- ter ride and handling charac- teristics.
