KR - Friday, January 18. [98K - North Shore News Future determined by NVD decision Dear Editor: There are some fringe benefits derived from observing the actions of the District of North Vancouver Council debating the future of the eagle nest at Roche Point in Deep Cove. The cagle nest will unwittingly show the truth of thought of those who decide the future of our district. If the nest is not granted the 100 metre absolute minimum radius, then the nest is condemned to extinction, and it will then in- dicate to the municipal electorate the potential Chicago-type sub- Retirees pay their way Dear Editor: I thank Noel Wright for offering the perfect epithet for his Jan. 3 column about the aging of West Van's population -- ‘‘balder- dash!"’ My own. mind had gone toward ‘‘fatuous!" His (and the real estate board's) notions that pit ‘tyounger in- come-carning people’' against seniors is self-serving and mislead- ing. Does he think that those retired from the work force and business cease having incomes? West Van did not get to the top of Canadian community incomes without. the help of the 30 per cent of its adults-over 60 years of age. Retirees: pay their way in West Van as ‘they do in other B.C. communities. My own studies in- . dicate they have per capita in- comes as high as the community average. Further, they spend two-thirds of that on food, shelter, transpor- tation, Clothing, and appliances — just like the rest of us, I think we'd find in West Van, as in other places, that the seniors pay more than their share of resi- dential property taxes. To use the elderly to justify more multi-unit housing in West Van is insulting to them, The housing probicms of this com- munity are not caused simply by a lot of people growing older. 1 wonder why Noel’ Wright is pandering to the real estate inter- ests. Gerald Hodge, Adjunct Professor of Gerontology Simon Fraser University Readers enjoy travel columnist Dear Editor: We really enjoyed Wishart’ 's travel column on cruising the Mex- ican coast on the North Star. It was so interesting we are now getting information from a travel agency that books Exploration Cruise Lines and may take the trip. We look forward to further col- umns by David Wishart with inter- est. 8B. Mf the alderpersons use wisdoin and allow the eagle nest to flourish by granting it the required mini- mum 100 metre radius, as recom- mended by the cagle specialists from the University of British Columbia who are not prejudiced in theirs knowledgeable judgment by the influence of either provin- cial or local politicians, then perhaps we can look forward with confidence to the future well-being of a unique district.
