That makes the graceful cetacean the per- tect choice for buyers searching out a unique wedding gift, says artist Richard de fa Mare. “Twas inspired by a 25th wedding anniversary to make a piece ~~ a silver killer whale in a frame,” he savs. The piece has now become one of his reg- ular offerings available for purchase at his Dollarton-road studio and shop: Coast Raven Design Studio. Together with artist Artie George, who designs and carves wood picces for the busi- ness, de Ja Mare runs one of the only studios selling original First Nations art on the North Shore. He’s been in the same location, a house at 2257 Dollarton, for 28 years. “People refer to us as the North Shore’s undiscovered treasure,” he says. “Only the people who live cast of us and drive by regu- larly seem to know we’rc here.” Which is too bad, because by purchasing pieces directly from the artist rather than through a retail location, buyers can save money, he says. “It’s good for us and good for the peo- pie.” But as de la Mare knows, it can be a little intimidating for people to simply stop in. “People tell me all the time that they've been driving by for 20 years and finally got up the nerve to come in,” he says, and adds “Depending on my moed, they stay for awhile or they leave right away.” But staying awhile is what “he and George hope visitors will.do, and even if they don’t buy anything, visitors are welcome to watch the pair at work. De la Mare says he and George try to pro- vide the legends and stories associated with each piece they create. “Bur we like to say we're artists, not story- tellers. Artie’s uncle Chief Dan George was quite a story. teller,” he says. But -he and Gcorge spend more time working on their art than talking about it. - Coast Raven Design Studio is “open through the summer from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.
