bed rest, so for much of the

where I was, flat on my

great logs, I couldn’t turn

had to fearn to eat off a

My bedroom was
upstairs, and my poor belea-
guered mother had to toil up
and down a dozen times a
day for nursing purposes.

Nobody had dreamed of
television, the only radio
was down in the livingraom
with the gramophone, so
reading was my only dis-
traction from the pain and
loneliness, It’s pretty tire-
some holding a book in
front of your face hour after
hour, and boredom doesn’t
speed recovery.

Times have changed.

home nursing attention is
nowadays commonplace.
