Adelberg got into martial arts 15 years ago at age eight. Just four years ago he opened his own storefront stu- dio that caters to all; ages, sizes and skill — levels, “Martial arts was something that inspired me,” said Adelberg, who has won North American champi- onships. “My vision is not only to be 2 martial arts instructor, but to share the values of martial arts: courtesy, respect, integrity. A Taste of Japan Te’s hard not to feel tranquil at Zen Sushi, even on a drizzly day. The six-year-old sushi restau- rant has panoramic windows to gaze through at English Bay and beyond. When the sun’s out, reports manager Angela Jamal, the patio is packed. Jamal; a 14-year ll restaurant veteran, is tond of the restau- : rant’s San Francisco rolls. “Fresh baby shrimp and dungeness crab, wrapped in a very thin egg crepe with Nobu’s secret sauce. Delicious.” Nobu is head chef Nobu Ochi. Zen lured him away from Tojo’s, the Broadway sushi eatery popular with the Hollywood North sect. “We're very lucky,” Jamal said. Like Tojo’s, Zen attracts its share of celebrities. Bur Jamal isn’t a_name-dropper and you won't find their photos splashed over the walls of Zen. Seems they like the place for its tranquility, “They come in here for that reason,” she said. “I can think of three or four off the top of my head, very famous. And then there’s what Jackson describes as “unusual desserts,” Beside the organic blueberry pies, apple crisps and tofu cheese- cakes is chocolate cous cous cake. Jackson is soon to add 2 mango and chili pepper dessert to the summer menu. The Green Spot’s menu isn’t exclusively vegetarian, though you won't find red meat. A night- ly fish dish is served. In addition to the plants, the atmosphere is set by live musi- cians and art work by local artists. “The philosophy is non-smok- ing, healthy, fun, food,” Jackson said.
