Sunday, April 4, 1999 — North Shore News — 25 CUSTOM MADE CLUBS Special - Tour Wrap Regrip $3.00/club Regrove irons for Bite & Spin Control into the swing of things Andrew McCredie Sports Editor andyew@nsnews.cor THE consistent appear- ance of that bright orange ball in the southern sky can only mean one thing: golfers are ready to get back in the swing of things. Of course, if you don’t mind a little rain and mud, you can play 12 months a year on the North Shore, but for the majority of golfers the game is a seasonal one. Here on the North Shore there is a wide range of courses to play — from the exclusive Capilano Golf & Country Club to the municipai Northlands Golf Course; from the moun- tainous Furry Creek to the gently roiling Gleneagles. And if your game isn’t quite up to taking on the tough ter- rain ofa Northlands or a Furry Creck, the North Shore’s two Par 3s — Ambleside and Murdo Frazer — are well-suit- ed to beginners and those looking to fine tune their c. The following is a look at what’s new at North Shore courses for 1999. Public courses Gleneagles: At just nine holes, this picturesque course is often overlooked by so-called serious golfers. Their loss. A favourite with retirees, Gleneagles is a challenging, mature course that maintains the ambience of how the game was played decades ago. Tee times: 921-7353. Northlands: North Van District’s municipal course has made headlines on a couple of fronts recently. Last month Golf Digest magazine named the Les Furber designed course Best New Canadian Course runner- up. That’s the good news. The bad news is that district council is looking to bump green fees to over $40. Tee times: 280-2111] Furry Creek: The big news from up Highway 99 is twoiold: former Mayfair Lakes’ operations manager Doug Dobson is the new pro at the scenic mountain track; and, more importantly for players, many of Furry Creck’s fairways have been widened. “We've cleaned out a lot of the rough, and purchased fair- way machines to widen the fair- ways,” reports Furry Creck general manager Sarah Cruse. Back for another season is the popular steak dinner rai- light deal. Add $10 to your round fee and you get a great steak dinner in the course’s airy dining room. Current green fees at Furry Creek range from $45 to $75 (includes power cart). Tee times: 922-9461. Semi-public courses Seymour: Arguably the best and most fair of the North Shore 18-hole — courses, Seymour throws open the doors to the public on Mondays and Fridays. Brand new balls and mats have arrived! SPRING SPECIAL BUCKET FOR A BUCK Buy 1 bucket get the 2nd { for a buck Sanrto dam” - 8am to 9pm 7 days a week 925-0102 According to general man- ager Michael Geluch, the course held up well over the winter, and is surprisingly dry considering the record setting rains. Geluch credits the club's non-metal spikes only poticy as having a big impact on course wear and tear. “We have found that the greens and everything else have improved substantially since we banned metal spikes,” Geluch says, adding that the Jayout’s small greens and tce boxes, combined with the high num- ber of rounds played per day, is a recipe for disaster if players are wearing metal spikes. Seymour green fees, at $42 a round, have not increased over last year’s rate. Tee times: 929-2611. Private courses Capilano: One of Canada’s -best private courses, the British Properties’ track is everything a private enclave should be — exclusive and well-guarded. Those fortunate enough to be members, and those fortunate enough to befriend a member, relish both facts. Tee times: If you have to ask... Par 3s Ambleside and Murdo Frazer: These quaint Par 3s are always good, relaxed fun. Both operate on a first come first play basis. Rates at) West Van’s Ambleside range from $4.75 to $7.75, and at North Van's Murdo Frazer from $3 to $4.50.
