word for making sure everything in
the car is designed for easy viewing
and operation.

In the past, the automotive
design trend seemed to dictate that
dictated the more bells, whistles,
lights and controls you could fit on
the dashboard the better.

Even airline pilots began experi-
encing confusion when they got
into their cars.

That’s when the auto industry
realized there was a downside to
complexity. People were spending
too much time scanning the dash-
board in search of simple things
like the gas gauge or the on switch
for the radio. When standing still
this is not a problem. At 100 km-h
(61 m.p.h.), it most definitely is.

To make sure your eyes spend
most of their time focused on the
road and not on the dash, you may
want to try a few simple tests in the
showroom.

First, you want to make sure that
controls and displays are not hidden
by the steering wheel. Simple
enough. Get into the car, sit com-
fortably and casually look down,

checking the view to the speedome-
ter as well as to the oil, water and
gus gauges.

No problem? Good. How about
controls? Do you find yourself
reaching around one thing to get at
another, or is everything as it
should be — at your fingertips?

Next, ask yourself if everything
is easy for you to understand at a
glance. Initially, everything in a
new car will seem strange, but if it
seems to you that you'll be forever
confusing the tachometer with the
speedometer, move on.

You don't want aaything to
come between your attention and
the road in front of you.

One more thing. Some car
radios still rely upon the kind of
complex, high-tech controls that
force you to take your cyes off the
road.

Sometimes the radio is located
in a spot that forever leaves the
poor driver groping. Take a
moment in the showroom to see if
you can tune in your favorite sta-
tion without taking your eyes otf
the smiling sales representative
standing just in front of the car.
