By MICHAEL BECKER News Reporter According to a race organizer, approximately 25,000 ducks made the chilly trip down a snow-lined Capilano River. And the annual North Van- couver Rotary Club event grossed about $125,000. Race organizer Ken Bassam estimates as much as $90,000 of the total will go to charity. Grand prize winner Erol Ongunel of North Vancouver bought the winning duck ticket at Lonsdale Quay two weeks ago. It was one of four tickets his family purchased. The winning ticket is worth $21,800 and is good for a trip for two to London and the Seychelles and a transatlantic flight via the Concorde. Ongunel didn’t make it to the river race site Sunday to watch his 49 Each P155/80R 13 Made by Michelin, these RoadHandler” + all season radials are exclusive to Sears. We always give to the causes as a fami- ly, but we never thought that we would win anything because of it.”’ The other nine Duck Race win- ners were Don Olsen of Delta, who won a $9,000 trip for two to Europe; Larry Giovando of Vic- toria, winner of a $3,500 Caribbe- an cruise for two; David Sin of West Vancouver, who won $2,400 worth of Save-On-Foods grocery vouchers; B. This year’s event received gen- erous local corporate support in- cluding sponsorship by the North Shore News. Organizations that have benefited from funds raised in past duck races include Lions Gate Hospital, North Shore Neighborhood House, Emily Murphy House, Variety Club, Meals On Wheels and the B.C. Heart Fund. According to Bassam, the race went off “like clockwork,”’ thanks to the effort of hundreds of volun- teers. Bassam would like to see the event expanded in the future to in- volve more community organiza- tions and more duck-related events. Delbrook Naturopathic Medical Centre Sutte t1o-371tt Delbrook Ave .
