Lower Mainland will prove it this year as they make the move to bring all community activities under one roof with the purchase of a Big Sisters house in central Vancouver. The new headquarters has been made possible in part with a pro- vincial government grant, and will get an additional boost through proceeds from this year’s Big Sisters Sunspin Lottery — a chance to take a spin into 1988 with a grand prize of a candy apple red 1988 Mazda RX-7 valued at ap- proximately $19,550. Second and third prizes are a _ seven-night Honolulu trip for two donated by the Hyatt Regency Waikiki (airfare by Harris and Kochler Travel) and a $300 grocery spree donated by Canada Safeway Ltd. Most of the proceeds from the sale of the $2 raffle tickets (3 for $5) will go toward the purchase of the new home at 34 East 12th Ave. According to executive director Marcie Bell, ‘‘The house is a visi- ble symbol] of the 27 years of ser- vice Big Sisters has delivered to the community. Many of the Little Sisters who are part of the pro- gram experience the problems associated with family stresses due to unemployment and lack of af- fordable housing. ‘We believe that bringing children into a nurturing setting will have a positive impact on their well-being. HEALTHY AGING PROGRAM teachers required two hours per week. This position is perfect for retired ex-nurses, psychiatric nurses, dieticians, pharmacists or doctors. A workshop on teaching adults has been arranged for Sept. 14 and 15. TEAM CAPTAINS required to work with a group of volunteers in hospital visits. You should have good listening skills, an interest and concern for older people and a lot of enthusiasm. There are no age restrictions.
