THE SUMMER blood donors is a rare bird. They know that the blood bank doesn’t ever take a vacation. “Accidents and iliness strike on their own scheduilc,’’ said Rick O’Brien, director of public rela- tions for the Canadian Red Cross Society, B.C.-Yukon division. “Summer is no except! 9n.”’ It is important .or_ eligible donors to give blood on a regular basis to avert crisis situations, O’Brien said. “Holiday periods put a real strain on the province’s blood supply. If an emergency occurs, a two-to-three day reserve can quick- ly be reduced to less than a day’s supply,’ he said. ‘And I’m talking about the en- tire province’s blood supply.’’ O'Brien pointed out that 80 per cent of .B.C.’s blood requirements come from the Lower Mainland area or within a two-hour trip from Vancouver so it can be sepa- rated into components. Otherwise, it can only be used as whole blood. By separating blood into its components, four or five people can benefit, as they receive only the blood component they require. But blood donors are a rare breed, and summer donors are even rarer. Only four per cent of the eligible population donates blood on a regular basis. O’Brien said this percentage must increase to meet the need for blood and blood products. ‘In order to meet the present and future need for blood, individuals should donate at least 20 units dur- ing their lifetime,’* he said. As the sole supplier of blood and blood products to 80 hospitals in B.C, and the Yukon, the Red Cross requires 3,000 units per week or 600 donations each working day. At the best of times, the Red Cross has only a two-to-three day reserve of blood on hand. Upcoming blood donor clinics on the North Shore include: Mon- day, June tS from 2 to 8 p.m. at Lions Gate Hospital lobby. Tuesday, June 16 from 2 to 8 p.m, at Lions Gate Hospital lobby.
