CRAIG CLARK 980-3268 AJAITTEN a] 73 - Friday, October 3, 1986 - North Shore News FIRST HALF RESULTS Construction starts show national gains STARTS ON construction projects in Canada recorded solid gains in all categories except engineering in the first half of this year. Figures were compiled by CanaData, a Southam Communications Limited marketing service specializ- ing in statistics-gathering and forecasting for the con- struction industry. The square footage of total construction starts was 152.7 million in this year’s first half, an increase of 21 per cent versus 125.8 million in last year’s first half. The dollar volume increased 7 per cent to 10.9 billion from 10.2 billion. Construction starts have been strong lately, but this is a period of uncertainty for the general economy. United States’ and Canadian growth rates have slowed. The U.S. is bedevilled by high interest rates relative to an almost negligible inflation factor and by federal gov- ernment deficit problems. The stimulus to the economy from the substantial decline in the U.S. dollar has nei materialized yet. SOFT AND SLUGGISH The Canadian West is suf- fering from lower oil prices. HAL LAYCOE 984-9977 CRAIG CLARK 980-3268, 988-1175 a : A wide range of Canadian exports is being hurt by softness in commodity prices and sluggish foreign de- mar 14. Expectations and hopes for the world economy are being pinned on a second half pick-up arising from the reduced oi] prices, continu- ‘ing good performance on the inflation front and the pro- spects for even lower interest rates. A star performer in the Canadian economy this year has been residential con- struction. The square footage of residential starts has increased 26 per cent, up from 75.5 million in last year’s first half to 94.9 mil- lion this year. The gain has been 19 per cent in dollar terms, from 3.360 billion to 4.011 billion. The reasons for the strength have been ‘well documented — lower and more stable mortgage rates, better long- term employment prospects and the release of pent-up demand. The regional square footage per cent changes from highest to lowest were: Quebec +37 per cent; - Manitoba +35 per cent; the Atlantic +29 per cent; British Columbia +25 per cent; Ontario +23 per cent; Alberta +19 per cent; and Saskatchewan -1 per cent. CENTRES PERFORM Some of the major centres across the country perform- ed as follows: Halifax +27 per cent; Quebec City +42 per cent; Montreal +44 per cent; Ottawa -20 per cent: Toronto +22 per cent; Winnipeg +29 per cent; Calgary +27 per cent; Ed- monton +15 per cent; and Vancouver +23 per cent. The square footage of commercial construction starts has increased five per cent to 30.0 million so far this year versus 28.6 million last year. The increase in dollar terms was six per cent to 2.334 billion from 2.198 billion, The overall percentage gain in this category resuited from a mixture of gains and losses in the regions. By square footage, the regional changes were: Alberta +91 per cent; Quebec +57 per cent; Manitoba +9 per cent; Sritish Columbia -10 per cent; Ontario -15 per cent; Saskatchewan -23 per cent. The large percentage gain in Alberta was due to the base year, 1985, being quite weak. GOLDEN SUNSETS .
