spell, I got into a let’s-get-
iLventive turn.

That takes a lot of nerve with a
family who thinks the greatest
surprise is extra Yorkshire Pudding
on Sunday.

This salad is meant to be served
warm, as in room temperature.
Because of the vinegar and brown
sugar you can let it sit for several
hours without refrigeration.

It teams beautifully with hearty
meats - grilled, breaded pork
chops, pot-roast, corned beef,
sauerbraten, schnitzel, grilled liver
or even meatloaf. As a side dish,
do whatever you like to do with
red cabbage or coleslaw.

Another good choice is sliced
tomatoes and onions, layered with
your best oil and vinegar dressing
and lots of herbs and fresh parsley.

German Potato Salad
Dressing
¥2 Ib, sliced bacon, cooked
slowly and crumbled. Save the
uncharred fat, set bacon aside
V2 cup bacon fat
112 cups water
V2 cup vinegar
cup brown sugar
3 tbsp. cornstarch
salt, pepper, garlic powder,
Worchestershire sauce (a
shake
and a jolt - taste and adjust)

Drain the bacon on paper towels
and set aside. Don’t mix it with the
dressing ingredients! Combine the
water, vinegar, sugar and corn-
starch and stir into the bacon fat.
