But it's a toss up as to who's the

The movie just wouldn’ t exist if

he also gets some touching mo-
ments when the truth crashes
home that he’s not a god and
there are certain things he can’t
change.

\f the movie had more elements

like those, it may have worked
better. As itis, winter will last
longer than this film will at the box
office.

ing highlights this gritty yarn about
the small town sheriff (Bill Paxton)

- That's about it for plat, give or
take a few wrinkles (like the’sheriff
had a very close relationship with
Fantasia, the woman on the run,
played by Cyndy Williams). But
director Carl.Franklin knows how

0 ge enerate suspense. A bloady,
tig tening beginning unnerves the
viewer, but it also indicates that

‘this is no idle threat blowing into
the Mayberryish town. a

However, no matter now vicious
or unbalanced the killers act, they
aren’t just psychos on the loose.
Franklin knows the vital impor-
tance of creating full- blooded
characters. ~~
