A holiday everyone can enjoy

To me, travellers come im
two varieties - ‘“‘prowlers’’
and. ‘‘floppers’’. A prowiler
wants to see something new
and different - he likes citi
and scenery, museums an
marketplaces.

The flopper likes to stretch
out beside a pool to
recuperate from his tennis
match or golf game.

Most of us can adapt to a
certain amount of doing the
thing we don’t prefer - Brian,
a devout flopper can occa-
sionally be lured to Europe
while I'll gladly hop a plane
to Hawaii in January - more
to escape scraping my car
windows than for any love of
‘*flopping’’.

You see, I can’t swim, golf
or play tennis and | get a skin
allergy in the sun. Luckily,
we have three daughters will-
ing to bash tennis balls and
scorch -their skins to keep
Dad company. I sit under an
umbrella all day, driving the
neighbors nuts with my
typewriter.

There’s one kind of holi-
day that takes first prize with
every member of our family -
cruising. Have you any idea
how difficult it was to lure
Bry onto his first cruise
ship? He was certain he’d be
¢sucrounded by ultra rich
Tetirees With nothing better to
do than gulp pills and discuss
their recent surgery.

Worse, the idea of beggar-
ing Ourselves buying a cruise
wardrobe to be worn while
recklessly tossing our entire
savings account to a hoard of
tip-demanding retainers hor-
tified him

Clothing? Almost anything
goes. As | recall, he wore a
Suit once and a jacket at din-
ner. A lot of men didn’t even
bother with the jacket. The
service was so good that he
felt the tips perfectly justified
and we both gained five
pounds on the food.

beating Hawati and
Disneyland four ways from
Tuesday.

There’s so much for kids to
do on board ship. Most ships
are in port just about every
day which provides a cons-
tant change of scene - educa-

On board, there are pools,
game rooms, movies, books,
organized games and classes -
one of my kids signed up for
an Italian cooking class and
thoroughly enjoyed herself.
The evening shows’ were
suitable for any age of child -
no nudity, no off-color
jokes.

Our only problem was
communicating with the kids
- we hardly ever saw them!
Even at mealtimes we often
missed each other - some
choosing the deck buffet for
lunch or filling up at after-
noon tea and skipping din-
ner. No need to go to bed

hungry - there’s always a
midnight buffet.

We often attended the
familiarization talks given
prior to landing in port. Two
weeks of these are about
equivalent to one semester of
social studies.

The kids played volleyball,
deck tennis, shuffleboard,
crib and backgammon. When
they weren’t busy they were
fast asleep, dead tired from
the day’s work.

Yes, it did cost us a fair bit
of money but considering
that we spent an additional
four days in Puerto Rico

before the cruise and another
