IF OLD RIP Van Winkle had gone to sleep a hundred years ago and had awakened to- day, he’d be astounded at the changes; airplanes, automobiles, television, steamships. But he would also be astounded at the change in peopi-. In 1884, Grandpa probably spent his days in a chair, with a cane, complaining of gout. Grandma _ would probably have settled in a _ rocking chair, sipping tea. But in 1984, in West Vancouver grandpa and grandma are square dancing on Wednesdays, hiking on Tuesdays, painting, learning French, rugmaking or turn- ing oul pottery. These are some of the dozens of programs offered today’s semior citizens at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Ac- tivity Centre. A highhght program this season will be Polynesian dancing, where scniors can sway their hips to the rhythm of the waves. Most of the programs at the centre are led by volunteers, such as knitting Seniors keep active tips on Wednesday after- noons, photography, stamp collecting and square dancing. In this world of women’s lib, there’s a course in carpentry skills for women, held Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. Women also can join in on woodcarving Thursday mornings and furniture repairing Mondays and Thursdays. And, in case one feels there is tOO much emphasis on pro- grams for women, there’s a men’s cooking class on Fndays at 11 a.m. New Golden Crown Restaurant Open daily 10am 10pm Dim Sum 10am.3pm Dinner Sam- tOpm 10% discount on dinner menu We specialize in Birthday Anniversary & Wedding Banquets For reservations call 688-6631 For more information JACK GRIFFIN, one of the seniors who actively par- ticipates in the West Vancouver Seniors Activity Centre, prepares food, as just one of the many hobbies the seniors enjoy. please contact the West Van- couver Seniors’ Centre at 926-4375.
